Spam - in computing terms - is any unsolicited email. By that - I mean any email sent to you that you didn't ask for.

For example, I regularly get emails from my bank, and other companies I've done business with - which are quite welcome - as they usually have information that I'm interested in. I'll usually read through them in case there's anything I'm interested in.

However - I occasionally get emails from drug companies, finance brokers and other on-line organisations I've never ever had any contact with. Those are 'spam' - and are send straight to my email's spam folder - which I simply empty without reading them.

As for 'dealing with it' - ANY decent email program should allow you to set up a list of 'safe senders' who you're happy to hear from. That way you'll always get emails for stuff you're interested in - anything else should be filtered out and sent to a separate 'spam' folder.
