In Twilight, the first book of the series, the conflict is that Bella finds out this guy Edward is a vampire, and she's in love with him. He's a "vegatarian" vampire, meaning he doesn't drink human blood, just animal blood, but Bella's blood is like a drug to him and he loves her too so of course he doesn't wanna kill her. Vampires aren't suppose to tell humans they exist so a few of Edwards family (or coven if you want to call it that) are a bit ticked off but most of them accept it. When they do a family outing one evening (playing baseball...it's very interesting in the book) a group of nomad, human killling vampires hears them and comes by, they pick up the scent of Bella because she's the only human in a group of vamps. All vampire's apparently have special abilites and Edwards is mind reading, he reading the killer vamps mind and realizes that they want to kill Bella. Now he's got to keep Bella safe.

Because "immortal children" are uncontrollable, creating them has been outlawed by the Volturi. After Irina presents her allegation to the Volturi, they plan to destroy Renesmee and the Cullens.
