Can you print with your iPad?

Yes, but only to HP printers using the free HP iPrint app available for free in the App Store.

Update: There are several ways to print from an Apple iOS device now.

AirPrint: Newer Apple devices (including iPod Touch 3rd gen or newer) now come with AirPrint which will allow you to print to any AirPrint-capable printer on your network. HP of course has the most models supported but other vendors like Lexmark, Canon, and Brother, etc., also have certain supported models. No app needed, just hit the action icon on your screen and search for available printers.

Printer App: Each printer manufacturer has its own app. Most will let you print to, some scan from, that manufacturer's printer on your local network. You'll get more functionality and more printer settings using the manufacturer's app than AirPrint but it works similarly. Again here, HP has the most supported models, even most of it's older printers, and the HP ePrint app is the only app that will allow you to print to local printers, print to your ePrint printer when away from home, or will guide you to a nearby hotspot location for printing like FedEx or airport lounges, Walgreens, etc. if you just want to print something out quickly while you're out and about.

Google Cloud Print: If you're wanting to print documents and stuff from the Google Cloud, you can set up your printer as a Google Cloud Printer and use the Print function built into the Google Apps. Some printers are Google Cloud Aware and need nothing more, just register your printer with Google. For most older models you first have to download some software to your PC, which will act as the go-between.

What is seek time with respect to computers?

As simple as possible it is the time it takes a disk to find a piece of requested data.

Seek time is composed of two parts:

  1. The time to mechanically move the heads from the track they are on to the track the requested data is on, this is usually the longest part of seek time.
  2. The time for the disk to rotate and bring the data to the head, once the head is on the right track.

Most modern hard disks contain a cache memory, if the requested is still in the cache memory the effective seek time drops to zero as the drive doesn't have to access the disk.

Who designed the first computer?

The first computer was designed by Charles Babbage in 1837. It was called the "Analytical Engine". The design was mechanical and Babbage never got to build his machine. It would have operated more like a large mechanical calculator than a computer as we know it.

More recent computers were designed during the Second World War to assist the British in their code breaking efforts, these were either mechanical or electrical in operation.

More modern computers developed all through the 1950's and 1960's, however these were large, bulky machines and operated on systems of vacuum tubes; this used large amounts of electricity, generated large amounts of heat and needed large rooms to be constructed in. The price of operating and maintaining them meant that only the military, universities and insurance companies could afford them.

In the 1970's and 1980's smaller computers were developed using transistor and then Integrated Circuit technologies allowing them to become smaller and produced in larger numbers; this gave rise to consumer products like the Apple 2E, Commodore 64 and ZX81 and ZX Spectrum. These products were refined and updated into the PC's, Laptops and Tablets that we use today.

Does the original iPad have GPS?

Yes, that's how it uses the maps app, because when the location services are on, there's an option that you can find where you are compared to the destination, or you can just use it like a normal gps and just track your movement, however, (and even though I basically spend most days researching technology, including the iPad, there are still a million things that I don't know about it, so this could be one of them,) you can't have it in third person view right behind your car and have it tell you the directions (I know, I don't like it either). Hope this helps! SeanHolshouser
