Emomali Rahmon led Tajikistan through the civil war from 1992 to 1997, surviving an assassination attempt and two attempted coups. Rahmon is a Sunni Muslim and has pushed for greater relations with other Muslim countries. He is a denouncer and condemner of terrorism. He has also been accused of manipulating the country's economy to benefit his family who control many major business in Tajikistan, including the largest bank in the country.
