Thyroid

The thyroid is responsible for controlling your metabolism, blood calcium levels, energy, excess fats, hormones, oxygen, weight loss. Blood tests can determine your TSH levels to see if you thyroid gland is functioning properly. If you have an under-active thyroid, you are said to have hypothyroidism. If you have an overactive thyroid, you are said to have hyperthyroidism. The thyroid can also be related to several other conditions such as Grave's Disease and heart problems.

Can thyroid disease kill you?

It depends on the form of hypothyroidism. For the most part, people's thyroid's put out a lower amount of thyroid hormone when they have hypothyroidism, but still put out at least a little bit of it, enough for them to survive.

However, in the case of people with Hashimoto's and other autoimmune diseases, if the ENTIRE thyroid is destroyed by the disease, or if the entire thyroid is removed or completely destroyed due to cancer treatment, they are dependent for the rest of their lives on artificial thyroid hormone. If it's unavailable, a severe condition called a Myxedema Coma can occur, where brain function eventually ceases due to the lack of thyroid hormone.

It's a rare, but serious condition, that yes, can kill, although it occurs only after a very long period of not receiving thyroid hormone, and if Myxedema coma occurs, it is treating if the person receives emergency medical attention.

Can you drink alcohol before cholesterol test?

What is a colloid cyst in the thyroid?

From what I know, nothing. They are usually benign when biopsied and can be removed if the thyroid colloid cyst grows so large (unusual) that it impairs swallowing or breathing. If you have other nodules that are malignant, they would probably take out the colloid cyst because there is a small change it could be malignant as well. Usually they don't make a big deal of thyroid cysts with colloid cells when I'm at the hospital.

What is the Difference between hot and cold thyroid nodule?

The difference between hot and cold thyroid nodules refers to the appearance of the thyroid when viewed by a Nuclear Medicine Thyroid Scan.

During a thyroid scan, the patient is given radioactive iodine which is taken orally. The radioactive iodine is absorbed into the bloodstream and gets picked up by functioning thyroid tissue. The thyroid utilizes iodine in its function of producing thyroid hormones.

With a Nuclear Medicine scan, the radioactive iodine acts like non-radioactive iodine and is absorbed by the thyroid gland to be used in the production of thyroid hormones. Therefore, functioning thyroid tissue will become radioactive by the absorption of the radioactive iodine. Areas of the thyroid which are overly functioning will pick up more radioactive iodine than normal tissue and are referred to as being "hot". Areas of the thyroid that are functioning less than normal or not at all will pick up less or none of the radioactive iodine. These areas are referred to as being "cold". With the use of special "cameras" the radioactive iodine is detected in the thyroid gland and a picture is formed. The "hot" areas will show up darker than normal tissue and the "cold" areas will show up as lighter than normal tissue or as completely blank areas.

The "hot" nodules are overly functioning thyroid tissue, very often palpable from the outer surface of the skin, and are sometimes cancerous tissue. The "cold" nodules are also sometimes palpable from the outer skin surface. These non-functioning areas can be scar tissue, cysts or a variety of non thyroid tissue infiltrating the thyroid gland.

What vitamins should I take after thyroid removal?

Sometimes, as a result of thyroid surgery, the parathyroid glands can get damaged in the process. This requires a patient to take a daily calcium supplement. Talk with your physician if they have any recommendations regarding what vitamins you might need to take after thyroid removal.

What mineral is important for a healthy thyroid?

The element that is most commonly added to table salt that helps control thyroid function is iodine. Including iodinized salt in your daily diet is important because it can help prevent thyroid conditions such as a goiter. A goiter is inflammation of the thyroid gland, also known as the thyroid gland becoming enlarged. Worldwide, the most common cause of a goiter is due to a lack of iodine in our daily diet.

The element that is most commonly added to table salt (also known as sodium iodine) that helps control thyroid function is iodine. To make sure you are getting the proper table salt in your diet the container will say "iodinized salt." The thyroid naturally absorbs iodine as part of the synthesis process in storing, and secreting, thyroid hormone into the body.

Could hyperthyroidism cause a false negative on a pregnancy test?

No. There is almost nothing that can cause a false positive pregnancy test, and all of the causes require an urgent visit to a health care provider.

_______________________________________________________________

Malfunctioning thyroids can't; they don't produce the correct hormones to trigger a pregnancy test. But to swear nothing can cause a false positive is irresponsible and false in it's own right. I've been the victim of a false positive test. Always be sure to test in the morning when urine is more concentrated. It's also best to avoid drinking a ton of water before testing, or after to try and test again. This can mess with the test and give false results.

1. False positive pregnancy test due to improper testing...

Improper testing can lead to false positive results. Always follow the directions! Instructions will specify when test results are no longer valid. You should time and record the time you perform the test, and read results at the instructed time. Guessing can lead to false results. "Double checking" your results often leads to false positives. Fishing your test out of the garbage after too much time has passed can change the initial results.

2. Evaporation line on a pregnancy test...

With some tests you can see where the testing line is. When urine runs across the test strip it can briefly change the color. Some tests allow you to see what can best be described as a watermark; kind of like what you see on US paper currency. If there is no color or you have to really mess with it in the light to see a line; it could be an evaporation line. Try retesting in a few days or using a digital test is recommended.

3. False positive pregnancy tests can be caused by certain medications...

Sometimes urine can be contaminated with blood or large amounts of protein, which can lead to false positive results.

4. Certain medical conditions can lead to false positive test results...

If you receive a positive result from a home pregnancy test it is important to see your doctor. It's is not common, rare medical conditions can cause false positive results on home pregnancy tests. Certain cancers, can cause higher levels of hCG levels.

5. Defective pregnancy tests...

Expired or faulty tests can also lead to false positive results. Remember, an occasional defective test may come out of a batch.

If you're unsure about the results of your home pregnancy test, ALWAYS consult your doctor.

Can you take Ibuprofen with your thyroid medication?

no, i wouldn't try it. when on PTU you should be careful of what over-the-counter drugs you are taking such as: motrin, aspirin, ibuprofen and other easy to get pills you should ask your doctor first, because their are alot of ingredients that don't mix with PTU. for example even if you read the labels (carefully) of the over-the-counter pills. alot of them will tell you not to take it if you have thyroids, trust me don't run the risk. just ask your doctor.

Do you need to fast before taking a thyroid test?

The thyroid is a gland located in the neck. It's job is to take iodine from the blood and combine it with an amino acid (one of the building blocks of protein) to form thyroid hormones. One of the hormones, thyroxine, is responsible for your metabolism. Thyroid function tests help to determine if your thyroid is not working correctly: * hyperthyroid - an over-working thyroid * hypothyroid - poor thyroid function

Abnormal thyroid function is common. It is seen in two to three percent of the entire population. When the thyroid is not working properly, it can cause changes in other blood tests as well. Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) Normal range for an adult: 0.4 - 5.5 mU/ml Preparation This test may be measured any time of the day without fasting. The brain regulates the amount of thyroid hormones in the blood. When the hormone levels are low, the brain sends a message to send out TSH. This causes the thyroid gland to send out more hormones. If blood levels of thyroid hormone are high, the brain senses this and sends a message to stop producing TSH. TSH is a very good test to check for hypothyroidism. TSH is increased with hypothyroid and decreased with hyperthyroid. Values may be lowered with use of aspirin, corticosteroids and heparin therapy. Values may be raised with use of lithium, potassium, iodide and TSH injections. Thyroxine (T4) Normal range for an adult: 5 - 11 ug/dl Preparation This test may be measured any time of the day without fasting. Thyroxine is a hormone produced by the thyroid. It is drawn to assess thyroid function. Low T4 is seen with hypothyroidism. High T4 is seen with hyperthyroidism. The T4 blood test can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of medications used to treat thyroid disease. Estrogen, anticonvulsants, aspirin use and anticoagulants may affect T4 levels. They are increased with pregnancy.

In short, the answer is no, unless specifically indicated by your doctor.

What does it mean if a thyroid nodule is vascular?

There's blood supply inside of it not just leading to it

What are the thyroid and parathyroid glands?

There are several thyroid hormones, but the most frequently referenced are T4 and T3.

  • T4 - thyroxine - is storage hormone. Its job is to circulate until it is needed. It will be converted by the body into T3 as needed by cells and organs.
  • T3 - triiodothyronine - this is the hormone used by the body's cells. Some is produced by the thyroid, but most is converted by the body as needed from T4.

TSH is often considered a thyroid hormone, however it is not. It is produced by the pituitary gland and stimulates the thyroid to produce hormones.

How long does it take for armor thyroid to work?

The Synthroid should work within 1-2 weeks. I currently take this medication myself. If you have further questions, it's best to ask your doctor or pharmacist to get the most accurate information. If you feel it isn't working after a couple of weeks, I would call my doctor. Thyroid production levels can change at any time. And it's really helpful if you ask your doctor to explain the numbers and how the medication works. You'll be glad you did.
