What is the connection between organisms in a stream and the dissolved oxygen level?
Organisms in streams need oxygen to live when lacking dissolved oxygen it will kill these organisms. edit: unless the organisms in the stream are photosynthetic, in which case they will increase the oxygen levels. however, by far, most organisms in a stream are not photosynthetic and oxygenation occurs solely through aeration and surface area dissolving from the air. so, to answer the question, organisms (most organisms which aren't plant-based photosynthetic organisms) decrease the amount of oxygen in a stream. edit: a flowing stream has turbulence which helps aerate the water, increasing dissolved oxygen. In contrast, stagnant water tends to be low in dissolved oxygen, except near the surface. Multicellular animals (like fish) need a good supply of dissolved oxygen to thrive.
How do you cut off a tree branch?
Get a trimmer or a pole saw depending on how high it is. If it is a thick branch, I suggest using a pole saw because it makes it that much easier to cut.
You'd be better off putting in a drain.
It Is The Storg Part Of The Tree Which Stands As The Feet Of The Trees So they Wont Fall Of Break.
How can you stop a ficus tree from releasing a sticky film on the floor?
If possible, take the tree outside, spray it off paying particular attention to the bottom of the leaves. Repeat this process every few days for a while and see if you can reduce the problem. If you have any other houseplants, they too are probably affected, just not as noticeable. Ficus can be rinsed off, but some other plants can't. It might be necessary to use an insecticide on other plants. Check with local plant specialists, but realize that it won't do any good to get rid of the pests on your ficus without taking care of the other plants.
Another thing I do when dealing with spider mites, is to replace some of the soil in the top of the pot with clean potting soil. Before you hose down your ficus, scoop out as much of the top layer of soil as you can and replace with fresh potting soil (I use the organic potting soil that is widely available even at Walmart) and then hose the ficus. If it is cold out where you live, you can put the ficus in the shower. It is a wet operation. You want to make sure to turn the branches as much as you can to rinse off the undersides of the leaves where the spider mites hide. Usually ficus are too large for application with insecticidal soaps, which are also effective but the showering is very effective though it might need to be done several times a month to really eradicate them. Also keep in mind that spider mites like low humidity so you will want to increase the humidity around this plant. Place the pot on a tray of pebbles and fill the tray with water. Mist your ficus if possible, making sure to get the undersides of leaves. This will somewhat help prevent an infestation from recurring.
Also, check the soil for soil mealy bugs, they leave a white film in the soil that looks like powder, check to see if there are small white rice looking critters with a white film around them.
What weed killer will not kill junipers?
A non-residual, specific, target pre-emergent or post-emergent herbicide is a weed killer that will not kill junipers. The herbicide must be applied away from direct run-off draining routes and without contact with injured root or stem tissues. It tends to be a more effective, less injurious control measure to keep the area from the trunk to the drip zone free of vegetation and of weeds by setting down landscape fabric or spreading mulches.
Can trees survive without bark?
the bark protects trees from diseases and insects, it is pretty rare that a tree can live without it's bark for protection.
What happens if the bark is cut off of a tree?
The bark is an outer protective covering. If it is totally removed, my guess would be that it would die because it would be open to invasion by microorganisms. If you remove just a little bit, I think it will survive.
By what three processes does water rise from the roots to the top of a tree?
Water travels from the roots to the top of a tree by the combination of 3 processes.
One of these processes is "transpiration" which occurs when water vapor escapes from the stomata, or small openings on the lower surface of leaves. This creates a negative pressure near the top of the trees which results in a sucking action similar to what happens when one inhales through a straw.
A second factor is "root pressure" which is the movement of water from the soil into the roots by osmosis. This causes a positive pressure in the roots which helps to "push" water into the plant.
The third process is "capillary action" which is the upward movement of water in very, almost microscopically, thin tubes. The structures in plants that transport water are called xylem tubes and they have a very narrow diameter so capillary action will occur in them.
These three processes acting together allow water to move against gravity to travel from the roots to the tops of tall trees and plants.
When you cut down a tree do you plant one seedling in its place?
yes, but better still plant as many seedlings or cuttings in the same area the tree covered as you can reasonably fit so that the competition between them will result eventually in the most competitive tree becoming the winner and growing at least as big as the one you cut down.
Do you need a permit to trim trees?
Different jurisdictions might have special bylaws but generally you only need a permit to completely remove a tree.
Is it true that trees can be planted only as seedlings on tree farms?
No. Because many seeds planted can get blown by wind, and fall off and travel to a new place.
Can you use aspirin as tree food?
What? God no ..
Just because it can be derived from trees doesn't mean it makes good tree food
Is there any way to heal a tree that has been stripped of bark?
If only the surface bark is stripped, it will heal itself. If the damage is into the first layer of wood youmay need to bandage it similar to a human wound. Wrap the area with a cloth and tape it up. (I use cheap duct tape so the sun destroys it in about a year) For sensitive plants (roses for example) you may want to soak the cloth in wax to make a nice seal around the wound. Even if the bark is damaged all the way around the branch, it will still heal in time. If the first layer of wood is removed all the way around for more than an inch or so the branch is better removed.
How do you espalier camellias?
The above answer describes fan training. Espalier training is training a shrub flat against a wall or frame with the side shoots tied vertically to the frame or wires. The top is removed at the required height. the framework is then pruned annually after flowering to control shape and growth. Any shoots growing outwards are removed.
What will happen if a birch tree has a trunk with no bark?
Nothing will change. It will just be more vulnerable to Cuts and Other damage
How could you determine the circumference of a large tree trunk?
Your question presumes that tree trunks are all circular. If you happen to find a circular tree trunk, you would measure around it to find the circumference.
If the tree trunk is not circular, you will not be able to find the circumference but, you can measure around it to determine its perimeter.
What percentage of a tree can you cut out without killing it?
The amount that a tree can tolerate having removed at once varies depending on the species and the condition of the tree. Some trees can be cut down completely, and then re-sprout from their roots! The general rule however, is to never remove more than one quarter of the canopy.
What time of the year should you trim your English ivy Ground Cover?
If you must trim it do it in the Spring.
What is the origin of the oystershell scale?
The oystershell scale is one of the most common armored scale insects that cause injury to shade trees and shrubs. When this scale insect was first described in Europe in 1758, it was referred to as the mussel scale. See the link below to the Entomology Department, Penn State University factsheet on oystershell scale.
