The important thing is they have done what is called a chargeoff, they have put a black mark on your credit, but essentially you are a dead account to them. So these company go to the financial institutions and they buy all the bad debt for pennies on the dollar. Now they can start harassing you for what is now their debt. If they intimidate you into more than 5 bucks on a Cadillac, they've probably made 4 dollars profit. Now, they bought what is in reality a non-existant debt, so they get everything they deserve, which is you being tough enough to just throw the mail that comes saying "Final Chance to pay Before Proceedings" and Mister X, wouldn't you love to get your credit back for only 300 bucks?" For one thing, you aren't going to get your credit back by paying them dollar one, because they did not report the debt in the first place. I seriously advise you to get a phone with Caller ID, and screen anyone but your family.
