It varies from person to person but usually around 30 years of service.

Could you be in the National Guard but not leave the us?

Certainly, that used to be SOP (Standard Operating Procedures) during the Vietnam War. Which is why there was a waiting list to join the Guard during the war; 6 years in the Guard or...2 years in the Regular Army (US Army)...and take a strong chance of going to "you know where..." (which is exactly how they sometimes used to refer to Vietnam back then).

That's all changed today in the 21st century...the Guard can be deployed. During the cold war days, activating the reserves/guard was an indication of "escalation" and therefore wasn't recommended. But today there is no cold war...so the guard can "escalate" all it wants!

What are the causes of fire on board ships?

The causes of fire on a ship aren't a lot different than the causes of fires in any urban setting. There are electrical circuits. An electrical fire is possible. There is a lot of machinery. Machinery gets hot when it's operating. An overheating bearing could cause a fire. Ships have combustion systems for generating steam, or internal combustion engines to generate electricity, or even turbine engines like jet aircraft, all of which get very hot and can cause a fire. The closed machinery spaces and the volatility of fuel, of lubricants or of hydraulic fluids around the hot machinery can lead to a fire, or even an explosion. A collision at sea could initiate a fire. The ship's company has to eat, so there's a galley where food is prepared and cooking is done. There'd be the same fire hazards as in a restaurant kitchen, wouldn't there? Repairs are sometimes undertaken on ships, and metal cutting and welding equipment is carried and used to fix stuff. There are some more possible ways fires could be started. Static electricity can start a fire, and ships like oil tankers are specially grounded prior to loading or unloading to prevent this possibility. And military vessels face fire or explosion hazards associated with carrying munitions. Grain dust around grain elevators is a hazard. It's explosive. Ships carry grain in huge holds. Dust is generated when it is moved. Is someone carelessly smoking nearby? Just about anything that can cause a fire around your city or town can start one on a ship. Be smart, stay safe.

How much time do you have off in the coast guard?

As with any member of the Armed Forces, a Coastie earns 2.5 days of leave a year (for a total of 30 days a year.) A day of leave is considered completely off duty and is similar to the Civilian vacation days. Unlike civilian vacation time however, if a coastie takes two weeks of leave, they must take leave days on the weekend in the middle. At the end of the calendar year anyone with more than 60 days of leave in reserve forfeits the days above 60. (There have been special cases where this limit is temporarily raised due to operations.)

Depending on the job you are assigned you will also have "Liberty time". Under normal conditions a Coastie works 40-60 hours per week, with the rest of the week considered liberty. For example someone working in a staff position (similar to a civilian office environment) works 8 hours per day monday through friday. A duty rotation might have someone work 12 hours on and 12 hours off two days in a row followed by two days off for a total of 48-60 hours per week. Someone assigned to a cutter underway could work 60-100 hours a week for a two month patrol, with reduced hours import to make up for the high tempo underway.

Unlike Leave, members on Liberty have to be able to return to their duty station able to work within a certain number of hours. (This is sometimes referred to as your B or Bravo status, with B-4 meaning that you need to return to your unit within four hours of their first attempt to call you. Note this is not when they first get a hold of you.)

Coasties also typically work until the job is done. This means that even if you are only scheduled to work 8 hours in a day, if something comes up you continue working until the job is complete.
