What is the sign-on bonus for joining the Navy Reserves?

It's different for each rate/rank, and whether or not you have any prior service, degree, etc., or not. Though the different rates are posted on the Naval Reserve website, they change at the whim of Congress and the President, and with this current administration the rates will likely be dropping, if not dropped altogether.

Where might the air come from to replace the water that is pumped out of a submarine's ballast tanks?

Submarines use High-Pressure Air Compressors to replace air that is stored in external tanks for use in emergency Main Ballast Tank blows and internal systems. The tanks themselves are located inside the ballast tanks.

Note that high pressure air is only used for emergencies; normal operations involves a boat coming to periscope depth, and then using a low pressure blower (essentially a high CFM fan) to slowly force the water out using its air. The backup diesel generator can also be used if the ventilation system is rigged to force the exhaust into the ballast tanks.

In both cases, the boat needs to be at periscope depth in order to use its snorkel mast to bring in air to supply the the LPB and the Diesel.

Why is there an acorn and leaf used for the insignia on Navy Flight Surgeon's wings. What is the meaning?

Although there have been many designs for the Medical Corp staff insignia, the current Oak Leaf and Acorn design are a reflection of those within the field desiring to enforce the idea that they are US Naval Officers, first, and Medical Professionals second.

As noted in the fine report, entered by the previous contributor in the first URL, below, the Oak Leaf symbolizes strength and the Acorn symbolizes development. Both have been used extensively, intoning those meanings throughout naval history.

The Oak Leaf and Acorn design was introduced in a General Order, 01 November 1883, and went into effect 01 July 1884. It beat out a competitor, the maroon Geneva cross, set in a silver Maltese cross.

The Naval Flight Surgeon corps, adds a wing to the Medical Corps device, which obviously indicates the staff corps' aerial ties. The first insignia was designed by Dr. H.J. "Tex" Rickard, who had been designated a Naval Flight Surgeon in July 1940. There have been a few changes since, including the change of the wing to be identical to that of Naval Aviators, as initially recommended by Captain Rickard.

The report, in the first URL, below, "The History of theNavy Medical Corps Insignia: A Case for Diagnosis", contains the full history, including some alternative theories that have been used to explain the device, such as the thought that they were used throughout the years to indicate a connection with Druidic healers, even though no information exists, militarily or otherwise, that such symbolism has ever been used to express such a link.

The report linked in the second URL, below, "Insignias", contains a cornucopia of information about current and past US Naval Uniforms and Insignia, including that of the Naval Flight Surgeons, as of 2005.

Enlisted vs Officers in the US Navy?

Enlisted people go to boot camp, and will initially do the majority of the "grunt work" on a ship (ie, sweeping, scubbing toilets, swabbing decks, etc). Once that enlisted person advances a few ranks, they will do less of that sort of thing. They do not get paid as much as officers, and also do not enjoy many of the privileges that officers do.

Navy officers are usually responsible for a group of enlisted people, and act as their manager/leader. They spend much more of their time doing paperwork, attending meetings, making PowerPoint presentations, planning, and other things of that nature.

This is a very generic response, as there are MANY types of officers and enlisted personnel in the Navy, with very diverse jobs and responsibilities. But hopefully you get the gist of it.

Can a navy seal go have another kid with who is not his wifes kid?

Do you mean "Can a SEAL have a kid with another woman, even though he is married?"

The answer to that is no. Adultery is a crime in the military that can be punished under UCMJ. However, it is very hard to prove because of the typical lack of evidence. It cannot just be a "he said, she said" case. Most adultery cases end out being charged as inappropriate fraternization. For officers, this charge can be a career killer and, most enlisted usually get general discharges for it. If the accused had a child, like your question asked, then the SEAL would probably be charged with adultery since the child is proof of the illicit relationship. He would most likely be removed from the SEALs and busted down a rank or two. He woud also recieve an official reprimand in his military record. His career would be over and he would be discharged within time as "other than honorable".

Why did Carlos hathcock join the marines?

It is my understanding, Per the book "93 confirmed kills" that Gunny Sgt Hathcock started as a young child hunting (shooting) to put food on the table for his family. In the era he grew up in the times were tough and jobs were lean. His father had served in WW II and brought back a German mauser and gave it to Carlos. He would play army in the woods with the rifle crawling through the brush and undergrowth looking for the enemy (which I would think helped his stalking technique). Carlos saw recruiters at his school and one soldier stood out from them all which was the Marine. In the book it said that the Marine answered a question of Carlos' in such a fashon that it impressed him to the point he made the decision then, it would be the Marine Corps. The book goes into detail as to what the question and answer was, I just cant remember it right now (Guess I'll have to read it again). The book gives a lot of background on Carlos and how he grew up. I would recommend reading it. It's not fiction but first hand accounts from family and friends from civilian life to his military career. Hope this helps. Moe
