Who invented the USB - the universal serial bus?

It was invented by an israeli company called "M-Systems" and the brand is called "Disk on key"

If you are wondering about USB the Technology:

USB was first released in 1995 by a number of companies including Copmaq, DEC, Microsoft, Intel, NEC and Nortel.

If you are wondering about USB flash drives:

Many companies claim to have invented the USB storage device bit M-Systems was the one to get the patent in 2000.

Trek Technology and IBM began selling the first USB flash drives commercially in 2000.

All Wrong... the M-systems comment is likely talking about the USB Flash Drive commonly known as the USB Thumb Drive. From my research the Universal Serial Bus USB was known about as early as 1994. The only fact about this is that a number of companies teamed up in its creation, Microsoft, Intel, etc. It was officially released January 1996 and put into production February 1996. USB 1.0 was likely invented sometime in 1995.

Is USB drive input or output?

It's an output. I think.

The usb port is already in there, so it should be an output.

An input is something you put in, and an output is something that comes out.

Hope this helps. :)

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a USB Flash drive?

Items can be moved on and off of them, unlike a CD, when you burn an item, it burns it and no items can be put back onto it. Plus, they are small and portable, unlike a CD. They also come in 16 gigabyte forms, with DVDs only going up to 4.7 gigabytes, and CDs going up to only 750 megabytes.

Which file system is the best choice when formatting a USB flash drive that you plan to use on both a Mac and PC?

For me, and for what I have researched all over the Internet, the best option would be the NTFS file system.

Doing this, you will be able to attach your external hard drive to any Windows computer without any problem, and for Macintosh, as I did, you can download a little free driver from (http://www.ntfs-3g.org/) in order to let your Mac OS X write on your NTFS disk.

It is easier to have this driver installed on your Mac, than install the driver in all the Windows computer you want to copy files from it.

What is the difference between a USB Flash drive and a thumb drive?

Alright USB is Universal Serial Bus wich is used to connect devices to your comptuer. Now a thumb drive is a very small device that has a varitey of the ammount of storage they can hold. Now Flash Drive sometimes reffered to as Thumb Drive is really fast but cost more and holds less. Now USB hard drives are slow transfer rate but the thumb drive plugs into a USB so im not sure what exactly you mean. Hope this helped :)

How do you make your external hard drive your main hard drive?

I think you would press F2 or some other key to enter the BIOS, Satellite Toshiba press the right arrow during boot up. Normally there is a message on the monitor saying what to do. Once in the BIOS set the boot order to boot from the USB drive, if the OS is on that drive. Some versions of Linux will boot from the CD and do not have to be installed. This is a big help if the hard drive does not work of if you just want to boot from a different OS. Linux and Wndows applications are compatible for all I have seen.

Can a USB port burn out a device?

I recently purchased a Toshiba external hard drive to move some stuff from my daughters tiny 20G HD on her Inspirion 2650. This is a USB 2 device, and I assumed the USB ports on the computer were also. I guess not. I got a message from XP saying the ports couldn't provide enough power to the device. I saw the drive had a socket for a DC power supply, so I plugged in the appropriate voltage wall wart. I immediately smelled burning circuitry, so I unplugged it. The USB ports smell like a burned electrical device and they no longer work when I plug in the USB mouse or a memory stick. I'm going to have to pull the MB and see if I can find a fuse to replace. Anyone done this?

You have burned the USB ports, and i doubt theres a fuse for this.you plugged the AC adapter in so it was getting its full voltage from that plus the extra voltage from your USB and you have fried the circuitry.

How do you download a virus onto a flash drive?

How many pictures can a USB flash drive 16 GB hold?

That depends on the photos. Several factors determine the size of a photo, including the type of file, size, composition and resolution.

Photos typically run anywhere from 1 to 5 megabytes but can be much smaller and much larger.

If your photos average 4 megabytes you could get about4000 pictures on a 16GB flash drive.

I have 1022mb, and it holds 2706 pic. so 43296 for 16gb

Is 512MB more than 4GB?

No. 2 Gb is 2048 Mb. 2Gb is four times the memory of 512Mb.

How can you uninstall Flash from your mac?

In the Utilities folder within the Applications folder you should find either (or both) a folder called Adobe Installers which will have uninstallers for any Adobe software you have installed or the Adobe Flash Player Install Manager which, when run, will provide an Uninstall button to remove the Flash player from your system.

What happens when you delete a file from your flash drive?

When you delete files from a removable media the data itself isn't deleted, just the file system pointers that says where the data for those files is located. The area where the deleted file data was stored is also now marked as free space so it is available to the system for any new files to be written there instead.

Yes they work quite well in cross domain environments. With capacities of up to 128Gb they offer huge potential for transportable and readily accessible storage. Life of memory on these devices is uncertain but I have seen some rated to 11 years which is good but not great.
