They don't HAVE to feed in the dark. They can feed any time. Its just that covert activities are better accomplished in the dark - and what is more covert then stealing blood?

What are medieval superstitions about vampires?

Dracula a character thought up by writer Bram Stoker in his 1897 novel of the same name.

Did vampires exist?

No. Vampires are a creature of folklore. The modern version by Bram Stoker is based in part on the legends of Vlad Dracul (Vlad the impaler) a 15th century Hungarian tyrant and torturer who is said to have consumed the blood of his victims.

Other examples of human cannibalism and hemophagy (blood drinking) exist in history.

One real vampire is the South American vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus), a parasite on cattle and other mammals. They use their teeth to make a small slit in the skin, then lap up (not suck) the blood, while their saliva prevents its coagulation.
Many religions believe that vampires are real, while others refuse such a revolting image. The many stories and movies saying that vampires living among us - especially the Chronicles of Vladimir Tod, the Cirque Du Freak series, and the Twilight saga (all are amazing vampire books, highly recommended) - lead many to believe that the existence of vampires is truthful. Many others that do not believe in vampires still wish them to be real. I highly doubt that vampires are real, and we may never know the truth. But yet, I always say to my fellow vampire fans, "Keep dreaming."

What are vampires afraid of?

First Answer:

Garlic, silver, sunlight (all of which can either seriously harm or kill according to tradition), the cross, holy water (from traditional Christian teaching that vampires are agents of the devil thus being unable to gaze upon or touch any sacred object), the stake, being burned alive (two common methods that supposedly kill any vampire for good) and depending on who you believe, various other minor things that might just be very annoying to them.

Second Answer by InuNoTaisho

Garlic was the potent plant of choice because of its overpowering smell and the fact that the scent of it is so strong that it actually comes out of the pores of the skin with sweat. Since it was so good at "repelling", it became a belief that it would work on vampires.

Silver is a metal that will burn the skin of vampires and will kill them if it is introduced to the inside of their bodies as an arrow tip or as a bullet. This is because in biblical lore, Jesus was betrayed by Judas for a handful silver coins. Because of its involvement with the slaying of Jesus, silver was deemed a "holy" metal and was forever denied to the forces of evil. This is why a vampire can never touch it.

Mirrors in the old days were made using a silver coating on the back to make the reflective surface. Again, because silver was declared a holy metal, silver could not reflect the image of one so damned as a vampire. Interestingly, this is also why they didn't photograph well when photo processes came along. The processes that used a silver plate or silver based emulsions could not capture the image of a vampire.

The sun is a distinct purifying agent throughout history. It emits ultraviolet, which is commonly used in some purification techniques today, and it also emits a great deal of heat and light. Heat and fire are used to make meat and foods safe to eat, and light dispels darkness and lights the way. From a pure philosophical standpoint, the sun has many properties that a vampire would find disagreeable. A vampire is buried in the cold ground or in a cold stone mausoleum. He/she is interred in the dark away from the light. Their bodies are cold and icy to the touch and they are devoid of the "light" of life. This is why it was believed that exposure to the sun would burn them to ashes.

There is a great deal more vampire lore, but these are the principal "fears" a vampire would have (according to classical beliefs).

What Powers and abilities do vampires have?

These range from culture to culture and from story to story
I'll make a difference between pré 20th century and 20th-21st century
In medieval stories, most vampires were cute. They were immortal and loved the night, but also fluffy, and didn't have much other super natural abilities.
In popular culture since the 20th century, most vampire have a wide range of powers.
very often (but not always) these powers are:
- Crooked, or sideways turned baseball caps. Often referred to as the "homeboy look".
- flight: some vampires have the ability to fly, some graciously (flying at high speed, with little flaw and also capable to levitate and glide), others more clumsy, much like the famous vampire elephant in the Disney classic, Dumbo.
- Super strength (for example: Dracula says he's can kill ten with one swat of his hand: however he is referring to killing the common housefly)

- super speed (ranging from a bit faster than humans to a bit faster than Pikachu)
- enhanced senses, such as distinguishing the subtle taste differences in feral urine.
- turning into a bat, a wolf, mist, a toaster, or often simply a banana
- hypnoses: Most vampires can calm persons of the other sex, or even control them. This helps them immensely during the Christmas shopping season. Rarely, they can do this to masses as well
- beauty: always a plus and although not all vampires are beautiful (nosferatu e.g), most are, such as Hanna Montana or Dustin Hoffman.
- Lie detection: Most vampires can tell when someone is lying, usually by sniffing a person's dirty socks
- blood sucking: Almost every vampire does this, with the exception of the vampire rodent, who simply sucks hickies.
- wall crawling
- Immaterial: Some vampires can go through walls, others must take the door way.
- no need of air (as they don't breath). However, some like to suck on helium balloons and hear their squeeky voices.
- Healing: Some vampires heal very quickly from wounds, some die rather quickly.
- Immortality: This is a tough one.

- Telekinesis: Very rarely, Vampires have telekinetic powers
- gain memories trough absorbing: rarely, vampires can get people's memories trough sucking their blood.
- reforming: Very powerfull vampires have the ability to reform, meaning that after extreme damage, they can renew and pull together their bodies. Very rarely (only Alucard is known to being able to do this), they can even do this after they've been decapitated.
- almost every vamp has no shadow, nor mirror reflection. This can be very frustrating when preparing for dates, or simply getting dressed in the evening

Can vampires be Christian?

I believe that they can, some say if your bitten as a Christian, your a Christian vampire. but if you don't want to harm anyone, and you believe in God, than anything is possible. It is also a myth that vampires fear the holy cross, it is not true. I am a Christian Vampire, and I don't drink peoples blood. If I get a cut, I always suck on it, But I don't do that to anyone else. I am what you call a Lifestyle Vampire, The kind of Vampire that does not suck peoples blood, they don't suck the energy out of them, they just dress like them, and wear cool Vampire contacts, and sometimes get some plastic fangs to look like the real deal. and yes, Lifestyle vampires are REAL vampires... and they are the best vampires to be if you a Christian one.

Vampires are dead people and once you're dead you 'have a very hard time' changing your mind about anything. A vampire can change his opinions at the intellectual level but all emotions, character traits, etc are pretty well set for eternity. What ever person you were when you 'died' will be the sort of person you are as a vampire. Now if you were deeply religious before you died then you will be deeply religious as a vampire. Count Dracula had deep religious convictions which made being a vampire difficult for him.

Can vampires suck your blood?

Not so much 'suck' as 'drink', no. :]

AnswerVampires are a myth, but according to such myths can indeed "suck" blood. AnswerVampire bats may very rarely feed on human blood. They normally feed on the fresh blood of smaller animals and fowl.

A vampire bat approaches its sleeping prey at night and quietly pierces the victim's skin with its sharp teeth. It then laps up the blood with its tongue. The vampire bat's saliva contains chemicals that keep the blood from clotting quickly, and the wound may continue to bleed and possibly become infected.

Vampire bats can be found from Mexico to Argentina and on some islands in the Caribbean. They are not native to Europe, despite the many folk tales of vampires that have originated there.

Answer yes they will so unless you want to be one don't let them drink you blood

I honestly don't think you would be able to pick out a vampire from a crowd of average people. People over estimate how different vampires appear from average people

Why do bats live in caves?

caves have never changing temperature and atmosphere. Most bats are nocturnal. They fly and forage for their food (bugs) at night. This means that they need safe places to sleep during the day. Caves provide the kind of protected shelter in which bats can thrive. Hanging from the ceiling of a cave, bats are out of reach of most of their enemies. Some of the most successful species of bats live in large cave colonies. Some of these colonies have millions of members, even up to 20 million! Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico once had 7-8 million, but now has about 1 million.
