What is the origin of the term BFF?
Originally, Lynn Luongo and Diana Piccininni started using the
term BFF about 30 years ago when writing cards and letters to each other. They ended these letters and cards with BFF !
---
Please note, there is no evidence that the above is true. The term BFF was popularized by the TV Show Friends (see Episode 78: The One at the Beach, 1997).
---
As early as 1983 in junior high, I remember signing notes passed in class with BFF, TTFN (Winnie the Pooh origins) and even 2Good + 2Be = 4gotten. Ask anyone with a yearbook at least 30 years old and take a look at the signatures--you'll find "text speak". I grew up an Air Force brat beginning in the 70's and went to plenty of schools across the world; in every school people were writing these things. Taking that into account, I think the first answer above should be taken with a grain of salt.
Why do you stand for the pledg of aligence?
You stand out if respect, just like that of the national anthem. Imagine if everyone sat down, it would seem like they "don't care." Once again just respect, and you would also take off your hat if you're wearing one.

What is the origin for the term 'alcoholic spirits'?
2,000 years ago before any kind of mainstream science everything was believed to be of magical origin, and alchohol was believed to be made of literal spirits. The very adept Greeks realized that alchohol evaporated rapidly and figured that it did so because it was getting up and going somewhere else.
This may have also been the origin of the concept of a genie, people realized that some spirits were more "potent" than others, and created myths that some were very powerful, but could be imprisoned in a bottle since they were made of air.
Throughout history artists and poets and such have sought inspiration from "spirits", thus the stereotype of the drunk poet, and in modern culture, the musician seeking his muse in things such as LSD or THC.
A bit more of arcane trivia I came across some years back on this subject, the archaic definition of "inspire" was "to breathe into, as by a spirit". All inspiration was once believed to be supernatural, biblical inspiration being just one example.
And in the bible when christ is crucified the apostles are reasonably depressed - then all of a sudden they run around telling everyone that they've seen christ risen from the dead - but nobody believes them. Some accuse them of being drunk. They reply that they are not drunk, but *filled with the holy spirit*.
Very interesting.

You can't spot reduce unfortunately, but you will find that doing regular fat burning cardio and the right kind of resistance training will help lots. I have the same issue (super broad shoulders) so I do cardio 3 or 4 times a week (running, cross trainer)and resistance training twice a week. I tone my upper body and build up my legs. For the upper body, light weights and high reps, lower body heavy weights and low reps. Hope that helps. Gotta work at it. KJ
What does 'fair to middlin' mean?
It originally started as a "weather report" in England. It was originally worded, "fair to the midlands", with the midlands being the center part of England. Today, it has evolved to mean "somewhere between ok and average".
ANSWER:Its a term that comes from grades of cotton. Middling is the best grade. So if you asked someone HOWS YOUR DAY? They would often reply OH, BOUT FAIR TO MIDDLIN"' It means average or better. In the early 1900's an elderly lady got on the bus everyday in Houston Texas and when the Bus Driver asked how she was doing, her answer was: "I have the fare to Midland so I'm doing okay". He then asked her every morning "fare to Midland?". And she would nod.
FROM A COTTON GROWER WHO ALSO INTERNED IN THE COTTON TRADE:
Under the old method of grading cotton, which was phased out in the 1970's, 80's, and 90's, cotton was given a name grade according to its quality. Each bale of cotton was sampled, and the samples (about 5" wide by 15" long by 3" thick) were graded by trained cotton classers. Those samples ranged (listed from best to worst) from fine to good to fair to middling to ordinary, with intermediate classes later added. So a "fair to middlin'" grade was okay but not particularly good. It was probably acceptable, but not what was truly desired. Those terms still exist in use in the cotton trade, although computer grading of samples and numerical grades have largely displaced them.
From a cottonpicker
A method of grading cotton quality by the length, strength and color of it's fibers. The grades highest to lowest are as follows; Strict High Middlin', High Middlin', Fair to Middlin', Low Middlin', and Strict Low Middlin'. From memory, the difference between a bale of Strict Low Middlin' would sell for twenty-eight cents per pound while a bale of Strict High Middlin' was worth thirty-five cents.
