What are advantages or disadvantages of virtual machine?

The main advantage is that you don't have to buy two computers, and you don't have to stand up from one computer and walk to the other (or buy a KVM switch). The only disadvantages are that they are really slow, and not quite as stable.

Advantages

  • Increase the hardware utilization of your machines
  • Decrease capital and operating costs
  • High availability
  • You can run other programs in a VM that may not necessarily be in the same OS as the host machine (e.g. running Windows or Mac OS X VM on a Linux host machine, and vice versa)
  • Some VM solutions allow you to save machine states that will allow you to revert back to a previous state should an error occur
  • Generally VMs are somewhat isolated from the host machine in the case of infection by malware, the host will not be affected

Disadvantages

  • If the host is down, the VM will be inaccessible
  • Increased memory and processor usage as part of overhead introduced by the VM
  • With the statement of the VM being "isolated", it also depends on how you configure your machine. If your VM has stuff like shared clipboard/file folders or if there's a feature that allows hardware passthrough (available to a select amount of hardware) it may still expose your host machine to the same threats as if you will with a VM.

Can you upgrade a Windows 98 guest in VMWare Fusion on Mac OS X to Windows XP with an upgrade CD?

Yes, I just did it. With the XP Upgrade CD in, in windows 98 go to run in the start menu and open setup.exe from the cdrom drive, it'll install xp on the windows 98. Because you're not making a new guest OS in vmfusion, it still shows up as "Windows 98" but the actual OS is upgraded to be XP.

How much memory does it take to run three guest operating systems under vmware server?

That depends on what operating systems you are trying to run. WIndows Server 2008, for instance, requires a minimum of 512 MB. It is best to never use more than half of the memory available on the computer, so you would need a minimum of 3 GB to run three instances safely.

Can you install Mac OS X on VMWare?

Apple's EULA forbids running Mac OS X in a virtual machine (except for Mac OS X Server) or on non-Apple hardware. While it is possible to install Mac OS X in VMWare, it does not work out of the box. Because it is of dubious legality, WikiAnswers will not provide any information on how do so.

What is vmware virtualization?

It is the Software technology that allows a single powerful computer to run or contain more that one computer or server.

Why is this good?

it is good because it allows a company to buy a server and make it run at 100% capacity rather that 45% that standard windows server might run at, now windows server 2008 R2 has virtualization included as standard. this means that they use less energy to run the computers and ease of management of hundreds of machines inside a few servers.

How do you use VMWare?

To use it, open it and then open any Virtual Machines you may have. To make a Virtual Machine (if you don't have any), go to "New Virtual Machine", go through the process of finding an ISO file or using a drive to install the Operating System, and install the OS like you would regularly, as the people at VMware are actually very good at creating a virtualized computer, and have made their Workstation and Player so that they will actually work nearly exactly as a normal computer, if you have it in FullScreen mode, you may not even know that your using a virtual machine. A great feature of this is that you may create Portable Applications quickly and easily using a Virtual Machine rather than a normal computer if you barely have anything or nothing that didn't already come in the OS installation.

How many virtual networks does VMWare support?

Technically 10 on VMWare Workstation - VMNet0 to VMNet9. However, VMNet0 is usually used for bridged networking, VMNet1 is usually used for host-only networking, and VMNet8 is usually used for NAT networking, so you actually have only 7 virtual switches for exclusive virtual machine to virtual machine networking. ESX Server may be different, however, as it supports the use of virtual routers and such, making things much more complicated.

How can I install Mac OS X on VMware?

Mac OS X can only be installed on Apple hardware so Vmware is unable to support Mac OS X on anything other than a Mac by running, for example, a virtual installation of Mac OS X Server on a standard Mac OS X machine.

Conversely Vmware's Fusion allows the running of Windows, and other operating systems, on an Intel Mac running Mac OS X.
