Windows 98 has no built-in support for NTFS. This is not a problem, but a missing feature.
Computer wont recognize more ram?
If you've installed more than 4 gigabytes of memory, you're going to have to upgrade to the 64-bit version of Windows XP to recognize it all. A 32-bit operating system is only able to recognize about 3.4 gigabytes of RAM.
The computer, of course, will recognize that memory; and there are products on the market that will let you use the extra memory as a RAM drive. I'm still using the 32-bit version of XP, until I can afford Windows 7, and I have my swap file on the 4.5 GB RAM drive. I notice a substantial increase in speed with programs that do a lot of swapping to the hard drive.
How can you install Windows XP with your current OS Windows 98SE without formatting your hard drive?
If u have an additional partition like D: ten u can install winXP.if we are putting the XP installation CD it will ask wherre we want to install.don't try to install in C:.if u have only one drive and u have enough free space then u can use third party software for partitioning the unused party. Why not install another hard drive and choose which drive to boot to by using your bios. Windows has enough problems trying to keep it's operating system running, I wouldn't advise running both operating systems on one hard drive if I could do it with two hard drives. Before you do either you want to check "all" your hardware to see if it will run with both operating systems. What may run with 98 SE may not run with XP and God only knows what the next Windows is going to run with as Long Horn may not run with any or either. Good Luck with your system.
P.S. I have two hard drives one with 98 SE and Linux using a dual boot configuration and the other runs with XP by itself.

Are there any free CAD programs available for Windows 98?
Yes. Though note that they may not have all the features you want / need, due to their age / price. Most Windows 98-era computers probably lack the processing power for modern CAD needs, anyway.
Assuming your "d drive" is a CD-ROM drive, you can boot from the Windows XP install disk. This disk contains utilities that are very easy to use that will format and prepare the drives for installation of Windows XP. If your computer doesn't boot from the CD, you'll need to go into "setup" (usually by pressing a button when the computer first starts ie "Press DEL to enter Setup"), and find an option that says "Boot Order" or "boot devices". Make sure your CD-Rom is in the list ahead of the hard drive (sometimes listed as HDD or one of the IDE).
Because its old and looks dated, wait for Windows 7 because that looks great!
Is there a new version of newsid for Windows 7?

How do you delete folder containing cyclic redundancy check?
A Cyclic Redundancy Check, (CRC) is a data block that is added to the end of files, as well as other various blocks of data, to detect and correct errors. The value of the CRC data block is dependant on the data it is checking as well as CRC block generator equation. Unfortunately, if there are too many erros in the file, the CRC can not be used to correct the errors. There is a specific number of errors that can be corrected and detected depending on how the CRC block is generated. It will always detect the presence of twice as many erros than it can correct.
My suggestion is to delete these files without the help of the operating system. Start you computer in command prompt mode and type the following:
del C:\xxx\yyy\file1.jpg
where "C:\xxx\yyy" is the location of the file you want to delete, file1.jpg.
The location could be "C:\my documents\my pictures" but depends on your file system structure. If does not work try:
del /F C:\xxx\yyy\file1.jpg
Can Windows 98 read NTFS partitions?
Not by default. There is software available to read them, however.
Why does Windows crash when opening a folder with an invalid mpg?
"Not certain, but if the Windows you are using is XP, isn't XP configured so as to be capable of playing mpegs within Explorer? If so, this could be tied in to your problem. Try disabling that ability in folder options, it might assist."
ok i shall try and help here
the file is corrupt and whenever you try to read from the part of your hard disk it crashes because its trying to access a file that it says isn't there but at the same time is there
Delete the folder and the files inside and empty recycle bin
im afraid anything inside there is gone
A friend just had this but the file was on his desktop so i had to use command prompt to get rid of it but as soon as the file was gone then his laptop worked perfectly
Some more info
I don't know the answer yet, but I have the same problem. I know the file is not corrupt because, share the folder on the network and other computers can play the file without a problem.
So don't delete the file to quickly.
This doesn't solve your problem but you also won't lose a potentially irreplaceable movie.
Try putting in your XP or Vista disk and using the repair option? you may be missing some key files that will allow you to play the movie or even read the movie as a file
The issue is the video card driver either isn't installed correctly, or the monitor isn't being seen correctly with the right driver.
The most common problem is the video card driver. Go to Device Manager, and right click the video card, and select UNINSTALL. then reboot your computer, and it should reinstall automatically
What is the difference between regular and PVC windows?
"PVC windows are made of cellular PVC. It can be fabricated same as wood and is solid, and is very durable. Regular windows are made of extruded vinyl which is not quite as strong, thinner, and more likely to warp."
What are 3 main architectural layers of Windows XP?
The HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) creates operating system portability by hiding hardware differences from the upper layers of the operating system. HAL interfaces provide administrative details of low-level facilities. HAL presents a virtual-machine interface that is used by the kernel dispatcher, the executive and device drivers. The executive layer provides a set of services used by all subsystems: object manager, virtual memory manager, process manager, local procedure call facility, I/O manager, security monitor, plug-and-play manager, registry, and booting. The kernel layer provides a foundation for the executive functions and user-mode subsystems. The kernel remains in memory and is never preempted. Its responsibilities are thread scheduling, interrupt and exception handling, low-level processor synchronization, and power failure recovery.
I had this problem consistently occur with my PC and this operating system. As I remember it appeared to occur after I installed a new modem (or some other hardware). I found that even though I had to turn the PC off at the switch it did not appear to be causeing any other issue eg corrupting the harddrive (which would be evidenced by a scandisk occurring at next boot up).
If in your case it is causing no problems other than being annoying I wouldn't worry about it. Did you always have this problem or did it coincide with the installation of some hardware and\or software.
You could spend a lot of time trying to solve the issue and still not fix it. It is nice to have your PC working perfectly but sometimes you just have to live with these things. There may just not be a fix.
Keep in mind that Microsoft no longer supports this operating system, and hence a lot of application and hardware providers won't be bothering with this OS either so you wouldn't now what affect installing new applications will have on this old OS.
Another solution is to upgrade :)
AnswerThere is full information on Win98SE shutdown problems at http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/q238096/ It cured my problems AnswerYou may solve this problem by accessing in Control Panel > PMAdjust the settings
Or go to your Boards Bios > APM or Power settings
AnswerYes, someone already answered the question, if you go to Microsoft you can download a patch, the reason this happens is because the sound card which controls the shutdown, becomes corrupt or damaged, 4756us8 is the file, or Q239887 is the actual file, but after the download it is 4756us8 on the desktop, even with this file, the shutdown can become corrupt, and may have to be installed several times during the year depending on your software environment. Answergo to control pannel System Devices open system remove Advanced power management or APM Witchever restart it will reinstall it "usually fixes the problem the VXD can get corrupt from power loss if someone just unpluged your computer ETC it will do that"Bonkerz T Bobcat Rebuild & Programed Computers for 5 years now Still not the GURU yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Will Windows 98 recognize a wireless driver card?
Windows 98 will detect that a card has been plugged in. Whether or not it can USE it depends on whether the card has Windows 98 drivers available, and if you have installed them correctly. Most wireless A, B, and G cards have Windows 98 drivers, but very few N cards do.
A computer repair shop lost your computer How much money does the shop legally owe you for it?
The computer repair shop legally owes you a replacement at the value of the computer you left with them. They may try to tell you that their insurance company will only pay a certain amount for "items left in the care of others" but even if the company's insurance will only pay a part of the value the company itself still owes you the difference.
I recommend, in the future, taking your computer to a smaller repair shop (assuming you took it to a larger place before). Small business owners who don't own large chains tend to be more detail oriented and care a bit more about repeat business - often giving you better service and taking better care of the things you place in their trust.
Project of migrating from old system to new system?
There are a number of ways, of doing this.
One of my favourites is a program called Adonis True Image. This will copy all your existing data / hard drive, to A N other drive for you.
I don't think so ComputerDoc thinks that it can be done. Yes it is possible to repair without the original disk.
You can get a new XP Home disk and do a repair install. The best instructions on doing an XP repair install are here http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm You can also get an automated repair done that will preserve your programs and data using Reimage. It costs a little bit but it's well worth the price. The details on Reimage are here http://www.askthecomputerdoc.com/blog/reimage-repair/
