Woodturning

Woodturning is the turning of wood by some sort of power on many types of lathes to shape it into a desired form, in woodturning the wood moving, between centers or mounted to a face plate and the tool is stationary. All questions about equipment, tools, techniques and materials can be found here.

How do the Amish make table legs without a lathe?

The Amish use lathes. What they DON'T use is electricity from the mains, unless they're renting the building their shop is in. Instead, they put a diesel engine in the shop, connect it to a driveshaft, and power the lathe from the driveshaft with leather belts. Or they drive the lathe with air or hydraulic.

Why feed rod is using in the engine lathe?

The feed rod transmits power from the headstock to the carriage for feeding operations.

The lead screw transmits power from the headstock to the carriage for screw thread cutting operations. On some lesser types of lathes the feed rod and the lead screw are used for both the feed and the screw cutting power transmission.

What is a wood cramp?

A wood cramp appears to be a name used mostly overseas. From pictures online, a wood cramp is a tool similar to wood a wood clamp, except wood cramps apparently may be used in larger scale projects and in wood planing machines.

A wood clamp acts similar to a spring-action clothespin, except the clamp is much larger than a clothespin. Wood is glued together, then, the clamp is applied. The clamp is screwed down (handle that controls a long screw). As the tool is tightened, it exerts even pressure on both sides of pieces of wood, often at a the meeting of two boards or sides which forms a corner joint.

Clamps are used in all types of woodmaking and cabinetry, or any wood projects that have joints. For example, a clamp could hold the side and back of a cabinet section while the wood glue dries. It could also be used on a scaled down mock-up model of a display or building (say 6 feet high by 20 feet long).

Clamps come in different sizes; use is determined by the type of project and type of wood. A clamp's pressure, if screwed too tightly or used on softer woods, can leave imprints of the clamp into the wood, so size and amount of pressure exerted is important.

How does wood shatter?

Mirrors shatter. Wood splinters. Any force strong enough can create a shearing force that can make wood or timber splinter.

As examples:

  1. Driving past a stretch of woods, I saw several trees that had splintered about 3-feet up from the ground. The top half, still attached to the bottom of the tree, lay bent over onto the ground. The splintered section showed ragged pieces of varying heights (splintered). Tracks leading to the trees led me to conclude that a semi-tractor trailer had run off the road at a high rate of speed and ran into the young trees, splintering them from the force.
  2. When I was a child, my mother used a wooden spoon or wood yardstick to paddle me or scare me. One day, she smacked the wooden spoon on the edge of the cabinet as she yelled at me. The spoon's long wooden handle splintered. I did not get paddled. Another time, she smacked the edge of a doorway with the yardstick as she moved toward me to smack me with it. The yardstick broke into two main pieces and many small sections. She couldn't paddle me because the stick was broken. The uneven splintering of the wood fascinated me because it made long jagged pieces, and tiny splintered off pieces. Touching the broken part, I got a wood splinter in my finger.

Uses of lathe machine?

The lathe is one of the engineers' most valuable tools. Coupled with a milling machine or milling head (Tri-axis lathe) there is nothing that cannot be produced from virtually any kind of material.A lathe can be used to:# Turn an ornate wooden spindle# Skim a cylinder head or other gasket-face# Put a screw-thread on a piece of metal bar# Drill a hole of almost any size in almost any material# Machine an intricate valve, collet or gudgeon# Put a screw-thread INSIDE a hole (Tap the hole)# Produce a complex component such as a cog-wheel, crown wheel or pinion# Re-bore the cylinder of an engine# Create irregular / offset flanged components of infinite complexity.# Turn-down a piece of tooling to fit a specific tool. The list is almost endless. There isn't much you cant do with a lathe, especially if it has a milling head! (Engineers wet dream!)

What is a lath?

A lathe is a machine that is used to carve wood or metal by turning it.

Repair of lathe machine?

Repairing a lathe machine typically involves diagnosing issues such as motor failure, misalignment, or worn bearings. Common steps include inspecting and replacing damaged components, recalibrating settings, and ensuring proper lubrication. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning and tightening loose parts, can also prevent future problems. It's essential to follow manufacturer guidelines and safety protocols during repairs.
