There's a heck of a lot of clarinet types. There's the piccolo clarinet (the highest),E flat, B flat (the main clarinet), Alto, Bass, Contralto, Contrabass, Octocontralto and Octocontrabass clarinets... there's a couple more i didn't name because they're not modern clarinets... they're mostly sax/clarinet hybrids... and they sound PRETTY BAD.

Invented around 1690, the clarinet is a single-reed woodwind instrument with a cylindrical tube. The clarinet evolved from an earlier instrument called the chalumeau, the first true single reed instrument. Johann Christoph Denner of Nuremburg with the help of his son Jacob improved the chalumeau, creating a new instrument called the clarinet. Denner added two keys to the chalumeau and increased that instruments range by over two octaves. He also created a better mouthpiece and improved the bell (end) of the instrument. In 1843, the clarinet was further improved when Klose adapted the Boehm flute key system to the clarinet. Blues is a form of jazz so, technically, the alto saxophone is used for both. The alto saxophone is also used in many other genres including rock and classical.

I used to play an alto saxophone in high school for our pep band. Learning how to play the saxophone taught me patience, perserverance and a love of making my own music. It probably also taught my parents tolerance and patience too as they had to listen to my squaks and bleeps until I got good enough to make actual notes with it :)

Oh my... making a saxophone is complicated. People with much technical experience in designing instruments work with machines that create certain portions of the saxophone. I believe people create the molds, which the machines then fill. Bores are drilled into the main body, other mechanisms are made by hand, the laquer is sprayed on... it is play-tested before release.
