If a farmer had 17 sheep in total, and all but nine died, then the answer to this riddle would be nine, since it states that all but nine have perished. It does not state that "nine died" because it has the key word "but" in it - that will often throw the riddled person off if he or she is not listening to the riddler, thinking that nine died, not eight, which is what occurred.

Common MISTAKE :16 because 2 parents + 7 girls=9 and if EACH girl has one brother add 7 to 9 and that's 16!

i think the part that says each daughter has one brother is supposed to be the tricky part.. but its definetly not..

Proper correct answer Hahaha lol IS: It is the trick part ppl should watch out for it says : Each DAUGHTER has one brother so think about it ..... ALL DAUGHTERS have only one brother is the same as each SISTER having one brother (ITS A FAMILY REMEMBER)!!! Because it is a family and there is only one son in the family. So the correct answer would be 1MOM + 1DAD + 7Daughters + 1Brother = 10 in the family :)
