Moritz is not an unusual name for Germans- it's the German version of the name "Maurice".

What did the planes in World War 1 look like?

Planes form WWI were made mostly of wood and fabric airfoils and fuselages. However the Germans did use steel tubing for fuselages and wood for the airfoils (wings). The Germans did make an all metal monoplane (single wing) the Junkers DI but not in large numbers.

These planes were powered by different types of engines. A Rotary engine spins with the propeller blade for cooling. The engine is round in shape with the cylinders extending from the center cam shaft. In line water cooled engines were also used. Bombers were first used in WWI and they usually had more than one engine using either a rotary to water cooled engine but not both in the same plane.

When one thinks of a WWI airplane the bi-plane comes to mind (2 wings). But WWI saw many types of deviation's from this with mono, bi, tri and quadro-planes being designed tested and placed into service. (1, 2, 3 and 4 wings) The additional wings it was thought would provide better lift and performance. however these planes were mostly put together using a lot of wire rigging in between the wings to strengthen the plane to prevent the wings from ripping off when performing dogfights where severe forces act upon the wings (G Force). These wries caused more wind resistances and actually slowed down the plane from drag.

The planes were covered with a fuel resistant doped fabric for the most part. Although the Germans did use an all wooden design in the Albatros fighter planes, the D series and the Junkers all metal plane the DI.

By the end of the war fighter planes were reaching speeds on 120 mph and altitudes of 25,000 feet.

What buildings were not supposed to be hit by airplanes during World War 1?

strategic bombing during WW 1 was principally carried out by the United Kingdom and France for the Entente Powers Powers and Germany for the Central Powers. All the nations at war eventually engaged in such bombing, and, excepting Rome and Washington, the capital city of each major belligerent was targeted. A multi-national air force to strike at Germany was planned but never materialised. The aerial bombing of cities, intended to destroy the enemy's morale, was introduced by the Germans in the opening days of the war.

Early strategic bombing attempts led to the development of specialised bomber aircraft, during World War I. Initially bombs were dropped by hand and aimed by the naked eye, but by the end of the war bombsights had been developed. The introduction of air raid warnings and shelters can be dated to World War I, as can the design of anti-aircraft artilleryand the development of methods for coordinated aerial defence. Many of the advocates of strategic bombing during the interwar period, such as Italy's Giulio Douhet, America's Billy Mitchell, and Britain's Hugh Trenchard, had commanded aircraft during World War I. The improvements in aircraft technology during and after the war convinced many that "the bomber will always get through", and this belief influenced planning for strategic bombing in World War II.

What were some defense weapons used in world war 1?

Some defense weapons used in World War 1 included machine guns, artillery, poison gas, and barbed wire. Machine guns such as the Maxim and Vickers guns were used to lay down a barrage of bullets on advancing enemy troops. Artillery, including large cannons and howitzers, were employed for long-range bombardment. Poison gas, such as chlorine and mustard gas, was used to incapacitate or kill soldiers. Barbed wire was used to create defensive obstacles and impede enemy advances.

How many aces did the red baron have?

An "ace" was an Allied pilot who shot down five or more enemy planes. The German equivalent was a "Kanone", but a German pilot had to shoot down ten or more to be considered a "Kanone". This was all the invention of newspaper writers.

The Red Baron eventually ran his score up to 80 enemy planes destroyed. Most of his victims were two-seater recon planes. These were not necessarily easy targets, because the observer in the back seat had a machine gun to use in fighting off attacks from the rear. But they were generally slower and less maneuverable than single-seat fighter planes. A true dogfight was between single-seat fighter planes.

One of the Baron's hard-fought victories came over British ace Lanoe Hawker, who had around 11 kills to his credit when he fell before the Baron's guns.
