  • tigers
  • lions
  • birds
  • butterflies
  • penguins
  • rhinoceros
  • hippos
  • bears
  • flamingos
  • monkeys
  • alligators
  • crocodiles

But it really depends on the zoo.

How are zoos today different from zoos in the 1860s?

Wild animals have been kept in captivity for thousands of years, often as symbols of power or religious significance. However, what we now recognise as the modern zoo developed in the early part of the 19th century with London, Paris and Dublin zoos opening within a few years of each other.

This coincided with the Victorian fascination with natural history and increasing urbanisation of the population of Europe, and these 19th century zoos proved to be immensely popular, with millions flocking to see unusual animals from far off lands.

The majority of zoos served simply to display animals, with the more advanced among them, including London, also utilising their collections for the study of zoology. However, over time good zoos have changed their mission and focus due to a growing realisation and documentation of the decline in wildlife, driven mostly by loss of habitat.

From the mid-20th century these zoos have been finding ways to help conserve wild animals and their habitats, and the animals in our zoos now fulfil a number of roles, from education to ambassadors for their species. Some of the species we keep are now extinct in the wild and would have disappeared completely without zoos.

The modern zoo has changed to reflect this new role and developed dramatically over the years. It is now a complex operation, with specialists in many different disciplines including animal husbandry, health, nutrition, behaviour and records keeping.

By visiting our zoos you make a direct contribution through your entry ticket, to our field activities and to maintaining the threatened species in our zoos. Through your visits you also help us provide training and technical assistance to other conservation groups and individuals in many countries around the world, including here in the UK.

What are the advantages of keeping animals in zoos?

There are many reasons for this, these are only a few.

* Many zoos give injured animals a refuge while they recover so they may be returned to the wild. * Some zoos have breeding programs that help keep some animals from extinction. * Some zoos offer a home to nuisance animals so they will not be put down. * Zoos offer a place for people to learn more about the effects they have on the world around them. * Many zoos have extensive research programs that allow scientist to be able to treat ailments and problems of animals in the wild as well. * Zoos keep animals away from their predators. * Zoos give human enjoyment and entertainment. * Zoos give people an opportunity to let people see real life animals * Zoos give animals the food which saves the animal from fighting another in order to receive its prey. (If its carnivorous!) * Zoos give animals shelter.

Problems faced by animals in a zoo?

Basically it is the problem with maintaining its animals. The zoo is all about the money and its "Uniqueness"; on multiple visits to the zoo these are the ones I've come across so far. (at least from the outside)

Right at the opening of the zoo the scarlet macaws and Sulphur crested cockatoos are in the open under constant contact with the zoo's visitors. The birds seem to have no intention to escape (or their wings have been pinned down). This is very stressful for these birds. Similarly for the snakes that are kept for photo opportunities. Clearly snakes are not toys and constant contact causes distress to many of these reptiles.

There's the problem of small enclosures for most of the animals. And the successful breeding of the animals are not helping in the over population of many exhibits. Worse still the zoo lacks many barriers to keep the public at bay. I have noticed constant banging on the glass panels at the Pygmy Hippopotamus and a few others as well. Need I mention the warthog enclosures? They live in their own poo. Excretion mixed with mud is what the warthog's use for a good wallow.

The newest zoo exhibits (e.g. The naked mole rats) do not even have proper cages to hold these animals. The naked mole rats have been placed in what I call a plastic box, with hardly any space to move or dig into. These animals are shy creatures that are observed closely by the public constantly. Nowhere to hide they get frightened easily. That is something nobody has to go through let alone the animals!

One of the major and most obvious problem seen in the entire zoo would be the polar bear enclosure. The polar bears, Inuka and Sheba, have been clearly suffering from the intense heat. Algae growth has been spotted on their, supposedly, white fur. Moreover the bears appear mangled with hair loss, exposing their black skin. If I were to mention the enclosures, outdoor and indoor, I wouldn't be able to finish. Nevertheless these animals are at high risks. Polar bears in the polar region suffer the cold. Here they suffer the unbearable heat.

These are just a few of the many problems that the zoo has yet to solve. If unable to, an immediate relocation of the animals is required. Hopefully on future visits I will see a change in these, if not saying, "One of The Best Zoos Around" would be a terrible lie.

Some people believe that animals can be kept in zoos. One positive reason given is to keep threatened species alive.

Do Zoos make profit?

Of course. Zoos brag about conservation efforts and breeding programs to save endangered species, but it is all for profit. People want to see exotic, adorable baby animals. Notice zoos are never dedicated to breeding ugly endangered species. After cute baby animals grow up, they are traded, sold to circuses, or worse. Zoos do not care about splitting up families and emotionally damaging their animals. If zoos cared about wild animals, they would have sanctuaries in natural habitats to save wild animals from environmental degradation and human poachers. Zoos exist for human entertainment.
