Does blue heeler dogs get along with kids?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Like many working dogs, Australian Blue Heelers have high energy levels and active minds. The breed is one of the most intelligent dogs ranked by obedience command trainability. Blue Heelers Dogs need plenty of exercise, companionship and a job to do, so non-working dogs need to participate in dog sports, learning activites, or other activities that engage their body and mind.

When at home, Blue Heelers are happy, affectionate, and playful pets. However, they are reserved with strangers and naturally cautious in new situations. They are good with older, considerate children, but are known to herd people by nipping at their heels, particularly younger children who run and squeal.

How many pounds does a blue heeler border collie mix?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Mine weighs 80 pounds, but he's a little chubby (quarter collie 3/4 blue heeler). I think it really depends on how tall your dog gets but probably closer to around 70 pounds if they're tall, 65 if he's shorter. That's what my vet told me anyways

What is the difference between a blue heeler and red heeler?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Australian Cattle Dogs and Blue Heelers are the same thing. 'Australian Cattle Dog' is it's official name, but we (In Australia) often call them blue or red heelers for the colour of their coat and their ability to 'heel' cattle. There are however 2 breeds of Bluey (we shorten everything in Aus, it's got a nickname for the nickname). One is the Australian Cattle Dog and the other is the Australian Stumpy-Tailed Cattle Dog. They look pretty much the same, except for the obvious; one has a short tail.

Is cattle pour on wormer safe for a dog?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No. You should not attempt to use dewormers that are formulated for horses on dogs. The concentration is very high and it is extremely easy to overdose your dog if you miscalculate the dosage. Also, if your dogs is already on heartworm preventative, then there is no reason to try to deworm your dog with other dewormers without first having a fecal sample examined by your vet as most heartworm preventatives also treat for GI parasites.

What kind of cattle dog is the best?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There is no "best" breed of cattle dog just like there is no "best" breed of cattle. Use whatever you wish to use for herding cattle, whether it's a Border Collie, a Blue Heeler or Australian Cattle Dog or some of the above.

How can you tell if a blue heeler is purebred?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You really can not tell for sure unless you have the proof on paper. If the dog has breeder papers. Otherwise just the look of the dog is not enough for proof. If your dog was bred by the same kinds of dogs (ex. beagle male & beagle female) then it is a purebred dog.

When are Red Heelers ready to breed?

User Avatar

Asked by Coolblue5

You should not breed from your dog until she has had at least three seasons/heats. If you breed from her on her first or second season you will be risking stunting her growth and damaging her mental and physical well-being. Some breeders prefer to wait until their dog is three years old, but this is not necessary.

Do some blue heeler's ears not stand up?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

They will eventually stand up on their own, although the exact age is different with every puppy. I have seen a few that had one ear stand up completely and the other ear stand up only part way. If you see this starting to happen you can massage the ear in an upright postition and it will help strengthen the ear and help it stand.
