when I started in western Michigan in 2007, my beginning salary was 15.36/hr, with time and a half for overtime (that's mainly when called in) and double time and a half on holidays. it ended up being over 30,000 my first year. the problem is, surgical technologists aren't recognized for the hard work they do... we're basically the next guy up on the OR hierarchy from those doing janitorial duties. get an RN degree. you'll make twice the money and do half the work.

Asked by Wiki User

To become a surgical technician you should begin by making sure you can handle seeing extremely graphic and bloody things daily, as well as be able to stand for long amounts of time. Many technical schools provide all of the courses needed to become a surgical technician. The classes are usually anatomy and biology classes that eventually lead to hands-on learning called clinicals. After taking these courses from an acredited school, take the surgical tech state exam. After hopefully passing, apply for a job!

It all depends on the area or rather the state in which you will travel. It has to do with the cost of living price in that state. The price is comparable to the cost of living for that particular state. Secondly, it depends on your level of experience. If you have open heart experience you can make a minimum of $40 per hour. I was offered a position in Michigan and the hourly salary for a heart scrub was $40 dollars.
