Do sugar gliders carry rabies?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Potentially.

In their native habitat of Australia, sugar gliders do not carry rabies, as rabies is not present in Australia. Where they have been introduced to other countries as exotic pets, they naturally become susceptible to diseases such as rabies in that country.

It should be noted that members of the possum family are less likely to carry rabies than placental mammals.

Can opossums have rabies in Wisconsin?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There are no possums in Ohio. 'Possum is the colloquial term for the opossum, which is quite unrelated to true possums.

Most possum species are found only in Australia or neighbouring New Zealand, where it has been introduced. Australia does not have rabies, so therefore it is quite safe to say that thes possums do not have rabies.

Opossums can be another matter. Whilst it is believed that any warm blooded mammal can get rabies, opossums' body temperatures are generally too low to harbour rabies. It would be extremely rare to see this, but there has been at least one documented case of a rabid possum.

Where do you inject the dog for the rabies?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The vaccine is adminstered subcutaneously, which is under the skin. However, in the United States, only an accredited veterinarian can administer a rabies vaccination - if you do this at home, your dog is presumed to be unvaccinated and could be impounded or euthanized if it bites someone.

Some vets will give it in the muscle (IM) but it is debatable which is best. Most still prefer the subcutaneous injection.

Think about it. How would Whales ever get rabies in the first place. Would a dog who had rabies ever bite a whale? I don't think so. How could he even do it? He would have to dive in the water and swim like hell just to catch the whale. I don't think even a mad dog is going to try that. Have you ever seen a dog try to swim? They dog paddle.

Does a rabies shot protect a dog from getting rabies?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes, but you might not want to go through the hassle of transport, etc. with a female in heat in a vets. office. A confined area with other dogs, on leashes (You don't know what their manners are?) could cause quite a stir! But I think most things can be done with a female in heat that can be done with her not. Unless you plan to bred her you might want to consider having her spayed, there are lots of good reasons to do so, and if money is a problem, most vets. will work with you on the costs. It's just really hard to keep unwanted affections from her when she is in heat, especially if you live in a busy area.

Do rabbits get rabies?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Rabbits are mammals and any mammal can catch rabies. Rabies is a viral disease occurring in warm-blooded animals, which causes inflammation of the brain. It is most commonly transmitted by a bite from an infected animal.

It is more prevalent in carnivores and omnivores such as foxes, coyotes, mice, and squirrels, as well as domestic cats and dogs, although extensive immunization programs have largely eradicated it in the US and Canada. It is not as common in herbivores such as rabbits; while wild rabbits may become infected through contact with a predator, your domestic rabbit most likely will never come in contact with it.
