Wired Broadband Data Access

Wired broadband data access requires a wired connection between a data server and the internet. A Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) utilizes the local telephone network to provide high-speed data transfers while a dial-up connection provides slower data transfer speed.

Does the Delonghi DCU72 Ultimate Coffee Urn require Filters?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Not necessarily. The grounds can be placed directly in the basket; however, you will have some finer grounds to get through. I always take a large commercial coffee filter, fold it to a point then snip off the tip, then unfold it and place the filter in to the basket before adding the grounds. The stem goes right through the hole you just created. Makes much cleaner coffee…

Can you hook up playstation 3 to a wireless router connected to DSL?

You must have a broadband internet service and if not DSL it must be cable because the PS3 can not be connected to the internet using the USB ports. You must connect either with WiFi or with an ethernet cable.

Can you use a router with peoplepc dsl?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes. You must first make sure your DSL modem is just a modem not a modem and a router. Then you must setup your DSL modem in "bridged mode". Next log into your router and change it from DHCP to PPPoE and enter your DSL username and password in the proper fields. All will work well from that point on.

Why adsl upload speeds slower than download speeds?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

This is by design, and is reflected in the name - the A in ADSL stands for Asymmetric, reflecting the fact that the speed is not the same in both directions.

There are both technical and marketing reasons for this. On the technical side, it is simpler to provide high speed in the download than the upload direction. On the marketing side, this allows companies to sell high download speeds to private customers for a relatively low cost, since download speed is what most households are interested in, while at the same time charging much more for business customers that need high upload speed as well.

Is there a device that lets you connect to a computer using dsl from a phone jack in another room without wires?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

What is this 'device' you are referring to? Are you using your phone lines in your house to run a network? If so, then no, it will be almost impossible to run a DSL modem to that network.

The reason is, a phone line network, which typically runs at 1mb per second, uses 'token ring' methology... basically one computer holds the 'token' and the other computers are constantly asking for it, and it travels ONE direction, not 2 way communication.

For the price, I would install network cards in all your computers, and run CAT5 cable, with a router near your DSL Modem. that way, the DSL modem will see one computer, but all the computers, attached to the router via CAT5 cable, will be able to access the internet.

What is the full form for DSL?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line and it is a name given to the communication technology using PSTN telephone copper wire. In this digital signals from digital computers are converted into analog form by DSL modem and transmitted via copper lines and at the receiver a demodulator transforms it back to digital form(binary).

How do you connect two desktops to one DSL modem?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You need to connect your modem to a ROUTER, and then connect both desktops to the router, instead of connecting one desktop directly to the modem.

You can connect the 2 desktops to the router either with standard CAT5 network wiring (recommended), or wirelessly if you have a wireless router and suitable wireless hardware attached to the desktops.

What is the best cable to use for DSL?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Cat6 cable is the very best. There is a Cat7 in the works but it is not yet readily available and the connector is different. So if you get Cat6 you have the very best available that will work on most everything. Coax DSL cable is superior but mainly used in industrial applications. A Cat6 shielded cable is also quite effective. In a pinch i have run two Cat6 side by side and punched the blue and orange of the first and the green and brown of the second cable on a single jack. This prevents crosstalk thus data loss. The Cat7 cable is a joke. It does not use an rj45 and is heavily shielded as to almost make it impractical.

A DSL Internet connection is faster than a satellite Internet connection?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It all really depends on which phone company you have that is offering you the DSL. To my knowledge, the fastest satellite Internet connection is 12mBit/s, which is approximately 1 - 1.5 mByte/s. DSL is usually anywhere from 1.5mBit/s to 10mBit/sec. As said before, it is suggested that you check out the website of your local phone company to determine what packages they offer.

What are the major differences between cable modems and DSL modems?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Cable modem connects through fibre optic DLS through phone line. Cable boasts faster speed than DSL Internet in theory. However, cable does not always deliver on the promise in everyday practical use. Cable modem services can slow down significantly if many people in your neighborhood access the Internet simultaenously. Both cable modem and DSL performance vary from one minute to the next depending on the pattern of use and traffic congestion on the Internet. DSL and cable Internet providers often implement so-called "speed caps" that limit the bandwidth of their services. Some home networks cannot match the speed of the Internet connection, lowering your performance

What does dsl function?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

DSL stands for digital subscriber line. DSL providers use the technology to provide high speed access to the internet.

DSL works through the use of telephone lines. However, unlike dial-up internet, the previous option available, DSL can be used at the same time as the telephone. This is possible because the DSL and the telephone signals use different parts of the same copper line.

This can be accomplished because both signals go through the line at different frequencies. The information sent back and forth through the line for the DSL internet access will use a high frequency. Alternatively, the information sent through the line for phone calls will use a low frequency. This way the frequencies do not intermix, causing neither to fail while they are being sent at the same time.

This was a massive improvement over the previous “dial-up” technology that did not allow phone calls to be made at the same time the internet was being accessed. DSL was also a massive improvement compared to dial-up in terms of download speed. DSL download speeds can range from one megabyte per second to three megabytes per second. Dial-up, on the other hand, can be as slow as fifty six kilobytes per second. That’s a big difference.

The speed of DSL internet is also maximized by the fact that downloads and uploads are sent through different parts of the cable. The space in a telephone cable will allow for both upload and download signals to be sent down the cable in both directions at once. However, the space generally allowed for downloads is much larger than the space used for uploads. This is because most web surfers generally use their internet service more for downloading than uploading. Clicking on internet links, for example, takes up very little upload bandwidth space.

These kinds of lines where the download speed is much great than the upload speed are known as ADSL lines. However, for people who need much higher upload speeds, there is the option of using SDSL lines. SDSL lines are DSL lines that have the same quick speed for both downloading and uploading files

While DSL has many great attributes, cable internet may actually be faster in most cases. However, cable internet is not available everywhere, making DSL providers the choice used by millions of internet subscribers.

What to do if the DSL light is off?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

This depends on what light is blinking and what type of DSL modem you are using. If you are having problems connecting to the Internet via your modem during the blinking phenomena you will want to reset your modem. This is usually done by pushing a small button on the back of your modem or sticking a pin into the small hole in the back where the button is housed within.

Look up your specific modem make and model online and do a search query for the users manual. Many manufacturers have PDF documentation online.

What are the advantages of Satellite Internet over DSL Internet?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

the information travels faster , dsl travels in a line and depending on where your transfer station is for dsl so yes satellite is faster goes direct into your cable. The main advantage that satellite Internet service has over DSL is that satellite Internet is available virtually anywhere in the US even in rural areas where DSL and Cable don't reach. Generally, satellite Internet service beats cable or DSL Internet when DSL or cable Internet is NOT AN OPTION. Cable or DSL access is almost always cheaper (less expensive) than satellite Internet, but not always faster.

Is braodband faster than dsl?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Answer: Sometimes

There are many different packages available for cable and DSL. A high-dollar DSL connection is probably going to be much faster than the penny-pinchers cable modem.

Having said that, it has been my personal experience that a cable connection is usually a little faster than a similarly priced DSL connection.

What is the maximum throughput of ADSL?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Your top adsl speed is based up on different of factors.

Some of them are:

  • Distance between your local dslam and your router
  • Quality of your telephone line
  • Quality of your router
  • Using wifi access or not(since wifi is slower than using old fashioned cords)
  • Even your PC overall perfomance can increase or decrease your adsl speed(download or upload) since PC's with low ram capability or slow hard disk drives tend to give a bad influence to your maximum download adsl speed.
