In the biggest towns - often expensive - town houses are rather expensive and are often divided into flats. In these towns the average dwelling is an apartment flat in an housing project.

In smallest towns or in the outskirts of the cities there is a transition towards individual housing. The typical French house has a garage and a garden, the size of which depends on the cost of the land in the area. The Colosseum was built in stone and concrete. Most big public buildings were built in stone. Walls made in stone are stronger than those made in bricks. Concrete also made it stronger to support this huge structure and meded its construction quicker.

It depends on what you mean by type. There are types by historical period, by geographic area, by function, etc. One thing's for sure, there are more types of types that ever before. At least hundreds, because some types are subsets of other types.
