Can you draw an x in a box without picking up your pencil or overlapping?

Common Wisdom:

No, you cannot. This is because of a theorem by Leonhard Euler in the field of Graph Theory. I will state this in Graph Theory terms: you cannot find an Eulerian circuit in a graph where more than two vertices have an odd degree. The "y" shape creates three vertices that have an odd degree, thus this is impossible. Please see the link about the Euler path for details.

An alternative view of the question (and answer):

You are thinking inside the box. You are being trapped by constraints which you are assuming, but are not stated in the problem. Of course you can draw a "Y" without picking up the pen or overlapping the lines. Simply draw a "block" letter Y. See the "Y in a rectangle" page for an example. (And, I fail to see how a rectangle makes this problem more difficult.)

Note the elements that make the second answer feasible:

# Interpreting "draw a y" as a "block letter y".

# Interpreting the words "in a rectangle" as meaning that you do not have to draw the rectangle.

I think this is counter-intuitive, but intuition is a subjective thing. Both answers are valuable.

What is meant by proportional drawing?

First you have to measure the object you want to draw. You should compare two parts of the object, such as height and width as in the width of a glass versus its height, or how many times a small part of the object fits within a larger part, such as in the human body and the head. The smaller part should be the measure unit you use to compare to the bigger part. Then you decide the size you want to give the object in your drawing. You make a draft of the object's contour. You measure your drawing's width versus its height and decide if the scale coincides with your model. If it does, then you add the details.

What is non perspective drawings?

A Perspective Image is an image that looks realistic and tends to be almost 3D, there is at least one vanishing point. Think of an image of a road. Notice how the road is large where we stand but gradually gets smaller until we can't see it at all? That's where the vanishing point is.

A Non-perspective image is an image that lacks in a vanishing point and is almost flat.

Why is it good for toddlers to draw?

it is good for toddlers to draw because it increases fine motor skills, eases them into holding writing utensils and making shapes so that learning to write will be much easier.

it also is a way they can start to build a visual vocabulary, understand the relationship between things around them and the 2 dimensional representation of them on paper, and they can start to interpret their worlds, through it may be very simple, it is important.
