The first answer was right humbug....or should I say "ignorance"? (Not in a bad way meant). I do not know your situation....but have you maybe tought so far that every single person (people) do have a past and they are maybe victim or survivor? All people do have a past. When it is a friend from you or something else, my suggestion is....try to talk out your issues with this person and show understanding, patience etc. but only in a honestly way. Southern United States it is very common. That and Honey. I think both are a little personal, but it's no big deal. It is just them being friendly instead of using Sir, Ma'am, or Miss. Also, they may have forgot your name and that covers them.
