Surviving the Pol Pot genocide was next to impossible. Once a group was rounded none of them was ever released. After torture and interrogation, sometimes stretching over several months, all of these men, women and children were brutally put to death. The Khmer Rouge in retreat had some help from American relief agencies - 20,000 to 40,000 guerrillas who reached Thailand received food aid -and the West also ensured that the Khmer Rouge (rather than the Vietnam-backed communist government) held on to Cambodia's seat in the United Nations: the Cold War continued to dictate what allegiances and priorities were made.

Pol pot practically murdered 2 million innocent people. "Pol Potwas trying to bring Cambodia back to what he called 'Ground Zero'. 'Ground Zero' was his idea of what a utopian society should be. In order to reach this perfect society, all the citizens would have to be peasants who lived life on a subsistence level. Another theory is that was afraid that since he wasn't very powerful, revolt and overthrow could easily be obtained. So killing all of the city dwellers was his only hope for retarding a coup, because he figured that only the educated and already tainted citizens would have the power to unite against him." There's an excellent book on the history of the Armenians. It's by David Marshall Lang. The title is "The Armenians: A People in Exile" and it was published in London by Allen and Unwin in 1981. Though the book is out of print, it should be available from most major public and academic libraries.
If you search the web for information, bear in mind that the Turkish government *denies* the Armenian holocaust and there is a lot of Turkish propaganda online.
The story behind the Armenian Holocaust is complex. In all, 1.2-1.5 million Armenians were murdered in 1915-17 and 1919-22. There is a mass of evidence from external sources (American and German, for example) and also in Turkish archives, too!

The Armenian Genocide happened in 1915. Armenians lived in their historical homeland for more than 5000 years, had kingdoms, cities, churches and schools. In the 13-14 centuries the Turkish nomad tribes came to the region, invaded the country of Armenians. Later they created the Ottoman Empire, a part of which was Western Armenia. Armenians were the intellectual Elite of the country, they were the richest shopowners, they were poets, politicians, doctors. Armenians were rich and what is more important they were CHRISTIAN, while Turkes were Muslim. And there was the Armenian Problem, by which the European Nations always made Turkey to do their bidding. Thus, the Best explaination is that Taliat Pasha (one of the organizers) gave : If there is no Armenian, there is no Armenian Problem". Armenians as rightful owners of the lend were a great threat for Turkish Tyrants.

There are also an equal number of historical documents that support the fact that the tragedies resulted from armed Armenian revolt. The following quote is from Dr.Justin McCarthy a Professor at the University of Louisville.
"Conflict between the Turks and the Armenians was not inevitable. The two peoples should have been friends. When World War I began, the Armenians and Turks had been living together for 800 years. The Armenians of Anatolia and Europe had been Ottoman subjects for nearly 400 years. There were problems during those centuries-problems caused especially by those who attacked and ultimately destroyed the Ottoman Empire. Everyone in the Empire suffered, but it was the Turks and other Muslims who suffered most. Judged by all economic and social standards, the Armenians did well under Ottoman rule. By the late nineteenth century, in every Ottoman province the Armenians were better educated and richer than the Muslims. Armenians worked hard, it is true, but their comparative riches were largely due to European and American influence and Ottoman tolerance. European merchants made Ottoman Christians their agents. European merchants gave them their business. European consuls intervened in their behalf. The Armenians benefited from the education given to them, and not to the Turks, by American missionaries.
While the lives of the Armenians as a group were improving, Muslims were living through some of the worst suffering experienced in modern history: In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Bosnians were massacred by Serbs, Russians killed and exiled the Circassians, Abkhazians, and Laz, and Turks were killed and expelled from their homelands by Russians, Bulgarians, Greeks, and Serbs. Yet, in the midst of all this Muslim suffering, the political situation of the Ottoman Armenians constantly improved. First, equal rights for Christians and Jews were guaranteed in law. Equal rights increasingly became a reality, as well. Christians took high places in the government. They became ambassadors, treasury officials, even foreign ministers. In many ways, in fact, the rights of Christians became greater than those of the Muslims, because powerful European states intervened in their behalf. The Europeans demanded and received special treatment for Christians. Muslims had no such advantages.
That was the environment in which Armenians revolted against the Ottoman Empire-hundreds of years of peace, economic superiority, constantly improving political conditions. This would not seem to be a cause for revolution. Yet the nineteenth century saw the beginning of an Armenian revolution that was to culminate in disaster for both."

Where there warning signs that genocide was going to take place?
There were two in particular: * The obsessive nature of Nazi hatred of the Jews, the hysterical ranting and raving about the subject, and the fact that so much of the hatred took the form of fanciful conspiracy theories. Moreover, the hysterical ranting were often expressed with the use of 'public health' imagery. * From 1941 onwards vast numbers of people were being (officially) 'resettled' in the small part of Poland called the 'Generalgouvernement'. It was obvious that this policy of using the area as a dumping ground was unsustainable.
What role did nationalism play in the Armenian genocide?
Firstly, it should be noted that the Ottoman Empire, the country responsible for the Armenian Genocide was not a Nation-State that was defined by nationalism and the Nationalistic Turkish Consciousness was in its developing stages. In the next five years, with the arrival of Ataturk and the Fall of the Ottoman Empire, proper nationalism emerges. Therefore any of the ethnic/religious/tribal sentiments that are today considered nationalistic were not at the point.
That being said, these ethnic, religious, and tribal sentiments were certainly prevalent in Eastern Anatolia and the Caucasus during this point in history. Turks defined themselves as a settled people of nomadic heritage with a unique (for the region) language who were conservative Moslems. The Armenians were a sedentary, Christian people in a very un-Turkish way creating an in-group/out-group mentality. As a result, the fact that these non-Turks had desirable tracts of land in Eastern Anatolia motivated militarized Turks to seize this territory and force the Armenians to resettle to less desirable lands.
What was the Lawrence Massacre?
The Battle of Lawrence was an attack by Quantrill's raiders, led by William Clark Quantrill, on the anti-slavery town of Lawrence, Kansas, a raid also known as the Lawrence Massacre. By 1863, Kansas had long been the home of strife and warfare, from both sides of the slavery versus Free State issue. In the summer of 1856, the first sacking of Lawrence sparked a guerrilla war in Kansas that was conducted for months. John Brown might be the best known, but numerous groups fought for each side in Bleeding Kansas. Lawrence, Kansas had, by the beginning of the American Civil War, already become the target for pro-slavery ire, having been seen as the anti-slavery stronghold in the state. In a bid to put down the Confederate raiders operating in Kansas, General Thomas Ewing, Jr. issued General Order No. 10, ordering the arrest of anyone giving aid or comfort to Quantrill's raiders. This meant chiefly women and children. Ewing confined those arrested in a make-shift prison in Kansas City. This building collapsed, killing four women. There was debate as to the nature of this collapse, with some claiming it was a deliberate attack on women and children, and others claiming it was merely a tragic accident. Citing as well an attack on Osceola, Missouri, the raiders worked themselves into a fury. Leading between three and four hundred raiders into the town, Quantrill started a four-hour session of pillaging, murder, and bloodshed. By the time they rode out of town, one in four buildings in Lawrence had been burnt to the ground, including all but two businesses. As well, most of the banks and stores had been looted. Left behind were between 185 and 200 dead men and boys. By 9 a.m., they were on their way out of town, evading the few units that came in pursuit. The Battle of Lawrence was one of the bloodiest attacks in the whole history of Kansas. A day after the attack, the citizens of Lawrence lynched a member of Quantrill's Raiders caught in the town. On August 25, General Ewing authorized General Order No. 11 (not to be confused with Grant's more famous General Order of the same name) evicting thousands of Missourians from their homes near the Kansas border.

There have never been any international criminal trials or civil trials concerning the Armenian Genocide since Turkey has effectively prevented many major countries from recognizing the genocide. So, no conspirator in the genocide, of which a large minority were Kurds, has ever been brought to justice.
However, unlike the Turks, several Kurds have apologized and sought forgiveness for the crimes of the Armenian Genocide or have been active in promoting the recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
