Indonesia is located in Southeast Asia. Close neighboring countries are Thailand, Singapore, Philippines,Vietnam, Myanmar (Burma), Cambodia, nMalaysia. Australia is located quite close to Indonesia too.

A large undersea earthquake near the island of Sumatra in Indonesia raised a huge section of the ocean floor, generating a tsunami in all directions. Most devastated were the nearby coastal areas of Sumatra, especially around Aceh province at the extreme northwest end of the island. But the series of tsunamis extended for thousands of miles, causing destruction in Thailand, Sri Lanka, and India, and as far away as Yemen on the Arabian Peninsula and Kenya and Tanzania in Africa.

Indonesia lies in the equator therefore it has a tropical rainforest. However some parts in Indonesia are highlands - quite singnificantly above the sea level - therefore have a much colder/ milder climate.

The Dutch started their presence in East India in the early 17th century. There was no such thing as "Indonesia" at the time, only a great number of independent Sultanates on the many islands. The Dutch Republic established a number of trading posts on some of the islands (today's Indonesian capital Jakarta being one of them) and from there, concluded trade agreements with most of the island's Sultans, with the aim of establishing a monopoly for itself with regard to the spices trade from the islands - which they did successfully, forcing the English and Portuguese out of the spices trade there. From then to around 1820 the Dutch Republic confined its role to that of local power broker and extended its influence by carrot and stick-methods: supporting the rulers friendly to them and 'punishing' rulers who did not abide with the agreements that gave the Dutch their monopoly position - sometimes by raids, sometimes by supporting 'friendly' claimants for the throne of a cumbersome Sultan. After 1820 the Dutch decided that they wanted more direct rule, with Sultans as only ceremonial heads of State. The struggle to get direct control was a long and hard one, and it would take until after 1920 until the Dutch really could consider themselves masters of the Archipelago.

The basic diet on most of the islands is rice (nasi), lots of it, supplemented with vegetables, a bit of fish, and, once in a while, savory meat and eggs. Anything with the word nasi in front of it means it's prepared or served with rice. All traditional Indonesian food is designed to complement or be complemented by rice. Beef products are consumed mostly by urbanites. Rural consumption of beef is kept in check by the need to maintain buffalo as draught animals and cows as milk producers. Chicken tends to be scrawny and tough in Indonesia, but at least it has flavor. Pork is produced and consumed by the Hindu Balinese, the urban Chinese, and the Torajans. In Islamic Indonesia, pork must be served-if served at all-on a separate table, and never on the same plate with other foods. Goats, bred all over Indonesia, are the Muslim staff of life.

Indonesia offers a staggering amount of fresh seafood: tuna, shrimp, lobster, crab, anchovies, carp, prawns, and sea slugs. Try the succulent baked fish (ikan bakar), or a huge plate of perfectly prepared prawns in butter and garlic sauce. Some freshwater fish such as the buttery belanak (gray mullet) are bred in compounds; take the bones out, mix with coconut milk and spices, then wrap back in its skin and bake.
