Serious problem. Or maybe not. Most laptops will auto-shutdown if they get too hot, to prevent damage to the CPU chip. So if it's still shutting down, it hasn't lost it's mind -- yet.

First thing, is it sitting on a blanket or pillow? Make sure the bottom of the laptop is not blocked, that there is free-flow of air underneath, and in the direction of the exhaust fan.

Make sure the fan vents are not plugged with dust. This is especially true if the laptop has been exposed to cigarette smoke (kills PCs faster than it does people), very high humidity, lots of dust, etc.

Get a can of compressed air from any electronics department or store. It's the kind made specifically for cleaning electronics. Using the provided plastic tube, blow the compressed air into the fan vents, all side. Do NOT use regular compressed air, there's a good chance you'll inject a squirt of water in there -- laptop innards hate water.

If blowing it out does no good, and if the fan is not moving air, then it's a trip to the guy with small screwdrivers. If your laptop is out of warrenty, there's a good chance the fan is going/has gone. They can be replaced, but be prepared to pay about $30 for the fan, at least, plus about $100 for the service, depending on rates in your area.

Above all, get it fixed! Soon, the CPU will absorb enough heat damage, it will die completely... you'll be looking at a new laptop at that point, or at least a new CPU/motherboard. More money.

I have not yet been able to diagnose the cause (drivers seem up to date and nothing obvious in the EventLogs) but I found a work around. If your laptop (mines a HP 4540) will display the boot screen but turns purple after login (as mines does), closng the lid and letting the machine go into 'Sleep' and then opening it up seems to work.

You don't have wireless network cards you have to buy it or you have to get a lan cable(s). After that connect your router to the modem if you have it. And connect all your computers to the router. Usually default settings allow you to work with internet and inside network without any correction of default settings. After that restart your modem (if you have it) and restart your router. What password? If you lost your Windows User Account Password, you may be able to circumvent it entirely by logging into the laptop with an administrator account and resetting your password. If you lost your BIOS settings password, you MAY be able to clear it out by shutting down the laptop, removing the power cords, removing the system batteries (all of them), and removing the CMOS Backup batter for 20 minutes or longer (so as to allow it to lose it's settings), then replace the CMOS battery, system batteries, and power cables. You will have to set the DATE and TIME, as well as device BOOT order, and any other settings specific to your computer. This solution my or may not work, but you should give it a try anyways. Right click your desktop and click properties on the drop down menu. Click on the tab labeled Screen Saver in the window that just popped up. There will be a button that says "Power" in the bottom right. Click it. In the window that pops up, click the advanced tab. There will be a check box that says "Always show icon on the taskbar". If this box is checked, uncheck it, click apply at the bottom of the window, then check the box so the mark is there again and click apply.
