Taiwan is an island state located off the coast of mainland China that is governed by the Republic of China (not to be confused with the People's Republic of China). Taiwan is also one of the "Four Asian Tigers," the others being Hong Kong, Singapore, and South Korea. The capital city of Taiwan is Taipei.

What is considered a safe haven for the Chinese Nationalists?

When the Chinese Communists defeated the Chinese Nationalists (Kuomintang/Guomindang) in Mainland China, the Nationalists retreated to the island of Taiwan (also known as Formosa) and established rule over the island. To this day, one of the dominant political parties in Taiwan is the Kuomintang (which goes under the moniker of "the Blue Party").

The irony is that because Kuomintang has unity with mainland China as an aspirational goal (as opposed to its political rivals which seek Taiwanese independence), the Communists in Mainland China prefer to negotiate with Kuomintang leaders in Taiwan than any other major Taiwanese political party.

Is Taiwan clean?

The streets and sidewalks? Yes, very. But I wish there were more trash cans. I'm not sure what everyone does with their garbage. Maybe, as a culture, they tend to not walk while eating and drinking, but I often find myself tempted to throw a wrapper to the ground because I can't find a bin.

The air, on the other hand, is rather polluted from all of the factories. There seems to always be a haze over populated areas of Taiwan. A lot like Los Angeles.

When did China lose Taiwan?

That depends upon the viewpoint of the people talking about it.

Taiwan is part of China instead of an independent country. According to the statement of the U.S., "THE US DOES NOT RECOGNIZE TAIWAN AS AN INDEPENDENT ENTITY. Furthermore, the US does recognize Taiwan as part of China."

China has "Anti-Secession Law", which states that mainland China and Taiwan belong to one China and that there is only one China and that the sovereignty of that one China is indivisible.

What's more, many countries and the U.N. recognize that Taiwan is part of China and there is one China in the World. For the above reasons, Taiwan is a part of China.

The people on Taiwan don't fully agree with that viewpoint and it is still a source of political friction.
