Bell wanted a better method of communication to beat the telegraph that was the modern mode of talking great distances in the 19th century. He, and his assistant Thomas A. Watson, worked very hard to perfect a new method in sound waves that would becoming the centre force of communication of all time! In 1874 in Boston, they had done it and the telephone was born. However, due to high expense and favoritism of the telegraph it wasn't until the 1920s that it began to be in full use.
