What does the name berber mean?
The term "Berber" is historically used to refer to the indigenous peoples of North Africa who speak Berber languages. It is believed to have been derived from the Greek word for "barbarian," reflecting a historical misperception of these peoples as outsiders. Today, many prefer to use the term Amazigh to refer to this ethnic group.

When did the Moors invade Europe?
Spain discovered and began to populate Mexico only a few decades after the Spanish Inquisition had begun. A number of ethnic Moroccan Muslims (Moros y Berberiscos in Spanish) and former Iberian Muslims (Muladíes in Spanish) stayed in Spain and converted to Catholicism, at least on the surface, as opposed to the majority who fled to Morocco or the Ottoman Empire. (This is no different than the Jewish response to the Spanish Inquisition.)
At first, it was Spanish policy to include relatively large numbers of Moros, Berberiscos, and former Muladíes in the groups that would populate Mexico and the Andes regions. However, it was quickly realized that without the strong central authority of the Spanish crown, a number of these individuals were reverting to Islam. Spaniards feared that this would lead to an endemic Islamic population in the Americas, which they would not abide. As a result, in the first few decades of Spanish control, all of the Moros, Berberiscos, and former Muladíes were deported back to Iberia all before the 1550s.
Some people note that Mexicans are, by and large, darker than Spaniards, but this is because of the racial mixture in Mexico between European Spaniards, Africans, and Indigenous Peoples (like the ethnic Maya). This darkness does not derive from the former Moros etc. In the 20th century a small Middle Eastern population of Muslims came to Mexico, but the majority are from countries other than Morocco or Spain and, therefore, would not be considered "Moors".
The Moors, who were Muslim inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula, gradually lost control of Spain due to the Christian Reconquista that spanned several centuries, culminating in the capture of Granada in 1492. Following their defeat, many Moors converted to Christianity, while others chose to leave the region to avoid persecution. The Alhambra Decree later mandated the expulsion of Jews and non-converted Muslims, further facilitating their departure. Those who remained often faced heavy restrictions and discrimination, leading to a significant decline in their population in Spain.

Who were the moors in Othello?
There is only one Moor in Othello, and that is Othello himself. To Shakespeare's contemporaries a Moor was an African person. The word was used indiscriminately of North African and sub-saharan Africans. The story Othello tells of his life is perhaps more consistent with his being a North African.
Othello was an European noble, from a line of royal men, and a christian. He is a person and a symbol. In western art there are a lot of Blackamoors, classical Africans, who symbolize blue blood (1100-1848). In the play Othello is the highest ranking person by birth and merit. The objections against him are those of the middling trading classes against the nobility. The Venetians cannot be considered mere racists as for one, human races were only invented in 1760, and they made The Moor their military leader. He was not lynched for marrying Desdemona, but was given a fair trial. I urge people to look farther than conventional opinions. This paragraph was written by Egmond Codfried (see attached link)

All countries conquered by the Muslims were allowed to practice their own religions. Islam is very tolerant of other religions.
There were certain exceptions for the Ottoman Empire. The government was to be Muslim, non-Muslims had to pay a special tax, and non-Muslims had to wear certain clothing. This special tax was for non Muslims to share the expenses of defence and army provisions as they were exempted from military service. However, when they agreed to participate in military service they were exempted from this special tax.
