Are flea collars bad?

Are flea collars a bad thing? Some say so, and I say yes as well. Most flea collars have chemicals that kill fleas. Ya, that is a wonderful thing isn't it? A flea-less cat or dog. But did you know that most flea collars have a chemical that sinks into your pets fat or skin. It stays there and creates pores of this flea killing gas. EW!!! Pores on your animal that stay there the rest of their life. Then what happens when the gas goes away. You better not think that the pores go away. No sir, they stay were they are. Then fleas can lay eggs in there and it will be even more difficult for your pet to get the fleas off. So you pretty much are torturing your pet worse.

How do you safely remove tic from head?

Put a small drop of olive oil on the tics; the tics will pull out and die and the oil won't harm your pet. Best thing is to use a tick pick which you can by from a vet or pet shop. Even if a tick is dead when you remove it there can still be infected liquids in the tick which can be passed into the dog if the tick is squeezed when removing. A vet will also remove a tick for you.

What can dogs eat when they have worms?

Feces from another dog or animal that has had worms. Usually for an outdoor animal. My Dad was raised knowing that a dog catches stomach worms by walking on the ground. The worms then enter their skin and eventually the dog starts coughing and when it does it coughs up the original worms and then swollows them. Therefore the worms enter the stomachs. Dogs typically gain worms from eating other dog's crap. This is especially true if the other dog who produced the fecal matter had worms. Dogs can also catch stomach worms by being in the same lot as another dog who has worms or in a lot that contained a dog who once had stomach worms. Worms can enter a dog via the mouth, anus, cuts, and other surfaces. Worms can live in the ground for 10 years or more. Therefore, it is important to move a dog lot far away from the original location before placing another dog in the fence lot. There is no way to get rid of worms out of the ground. Some people believe placing bleach or other cleaners or lime will get rid of them, but it doesn't.

Can a cat get a shot for worms?

Yes your cat can be spayed even though she has worms. Set up an appointment with your Vet to have her spayed and in the mean time bring in a sample of her feces and the worm too. Roundworms look like spaghetti, long and thin. Tapeworms look like little grains of rice. She could have other parasites too that you cannot see such as hookworms, whipworms, etc., so that is the reason to bring in a sample of her feces so the Vet can check it out. Make sure she has had her vaccinations too, if not, then have the Vet tell you what is needed & he will set her up on a schedule for her vaccinations. She could be dewormed then and again in 10-14 days.

How do hookworms infect humans?

An estimated 576-740 million people in the world are infected with hookworm. Hookworm was once widespread in the United States, particularly in the southeastern region, but improvements in living conditions have greatly reduced hookworm infections. Hookworm, Ascaris, and whipworm are known as soil-transmitted helminths (parasitic worms). Together, they account for a major burden of disease worldwide.

Hookworms live in the small intestine. Hookworm eggs are passed in the feces of an infected person. If the infected person defecates outside (near bushes, in a garden, or field) of if the feces of an infected person are used as fertilizer, eggs are deposited on soil. They can then mature and hatch, releasing larvae (immature worms). The larvae mature into a form that can penetrate the skin of humans. Hookworm infection is mainly acquired by walking barefoot on contaminated soil. One kind of hookworm can also be transmitted through the ingestion of larvae.

Most people infected with hookworms have no symptoms. Some have gastrointestinal symptoms, especially persons who are infected for the first time. The most serious effects of hookworm infection are blood loss leading to anemia, in addition to protein loss. Hookworm infections are treatable with medication prescribed by your health care provider.

How long should you wait to pet dog after topical flea medication?

You can pet the dog where the topical isn't applied. They say 48-72 hours before bathing after application depending on which flea and tick stuff you usem. We use the one in the blue applictor package (frontline I think???) when I read the instructions it didn't warn about keeping your hands off or call disease control if you get it on ya. I would just not pet directly on the applied spots until it looks to be dry. (few hours). Belly rubs are just as good :)

Can you get this parasite from your dog?

Yes, humans can contract parasites from dogs. The two most concerning parasites in the United States are roundworms and hookworms. Both worms shed their eggs in the dog's intestine and are excreted in the dog's feces. For roundworms, if a human contacts the soil or feces with the eggs and then accidentally transfers the eggs to their mouth, they can have a severe infestation that can lead to organ failure or blindness. Hookworms are a little nastier, as they can hatch in the soil then burrow through the soles of your feet to infest you.

What impact do parasitic roundworms have on other organisms?

Anything Parasitic has a negative effect on its host. Symbiotic relationships between the parasite and the host means that the effect is not negative but instead both sides benifit from the grouping.

Guinea worm disease is only transmitted by drinking stagnant water with Guinea worm larvae in it. As such, if you avoid drinking stagnant water from the few remaining Guinea worm endemic areas you are not at risk. If you do need to drink stagnant water from these remote areas, simply filtering your water through a cloth filter will remove the water fleas that carry the larvae.
