Some economic hardships that non-whites suffered under the Apartheid regime in South Africa included a lack of economic power along with segregation of schools, restaurants, and businesses. Non-whites were not required to attend school and were forced to move to 'tribal lands.'

It is understood Mr Biko died in hospital in Pretoria. The government minister of Justice and Police, James Kruger, stated that Mr Biko had been transferred 740 miles (1,191 km) from Port Elizabeth to Pretoria for medical attention following a seven-day hunger strike. Mr Biko had been in custody since 18 August when he was arrested and detained under the Terrorism Act. He is the 20th person to die in custody during the past 18 months. South African Embassy confirmed that he died from being beaten from the police.

In a nutshell: * The white people got all the good stuff. * The black people got all the bad stuff. * Black people couldn't go to a good school. * Black people couldn't get a good job. * Black people couldn't live in a good house. * Black people had to pay more tax. * The black people weren't allowed to use the white people's stuff. * If a black person used the white people's stuff, they got a heavy punishment. * If a black person did something to a white person, they got an extremely heavy punishment. * If a white person did something to a black person, they got an extremely light punishment.

Apartheid ("apartness") was a policy of the South African government (National Party) (NP) from 1948 to 1994. The purpose was to keep the various races apart.

It didn't change anything as blacks and whites were not living with each other before it was introduced. It was introduced to ensure that the two races stayed apart. The ending of apartheid however saw a massive change in that blacks could suddenly vote and as they were the majority of the population, their party is the one that now runs the country.

Apartheid caused many black South Africans to lose their jobs and livelihoods when they were forced to move to "black homelands". Black South Africans lost their South African citizenship and became citizens of their homeland. This allowed white South Africa to use them as cheap labor because, as non-citizens working in South Africa, the whites did not have to pay them a minimum wage or give them any legal rights.

The land set aside for the black Africans was not the best land and became even worse due to years of erosion and mismanagement, thus causing widespread poverty in the black homelands. The black South Africans were not trained for taking care of the land and did not have the money needed to manage it properly. Forests were cut down to provide heat for homes and a way to cook meals.

Many youths had to work and were not educated.

Due to the overcrowding in the black homelands, there were problems with foot traffic and waste.

And there was political violence due to the many factions fighting for control of the black homelands and fighting to end apartheid.

The apartheid made Nelson Mandela feel unhappy. He knew he had to make a difference in peoples lives, if he didnt, nobody would.

If the actual question is "how" - then I would look at the foundations of these systems, comparing the creation of the Apartheid state in South Africa and the events and ideologies that fostered the creation of Jim Crow in the United States. Then I would compare the actual implementation of these practices... how Apartheid was enforced in South Africa and how Jim Crow was enforced in the south. Then I would look at how these systems were accepted by the populations and what led to their respective downfails/failures...

Contrary to popular belief, very few similarities. Fewer people died under apartheid than have died in the past 15 years of "Liberation". South Africa now (2009/10) has the highest death rate of any Country not actually at war. Our violent death rate now is higher than some that are at war? I think this term is peculiar to the Union of South Africa. It refers not only to the division between the white and blacks, but the the division between the English and the Affikaaners.

Apartheid means 'apartness'. It originated in South Africa when the Black Africans were forced to be segregated, or apart, from the White Africans. It is similar to the segregation that occured after the slaves in the South were liberated.

The Apartheid of South Africa ended in 1990 not just because of one person. It ended due to massive protests, which were inspired mainly by the African National Congress (ANC). Nelson Mandela was a huge figurehead in the abolition of apartheid especially since he spent 26 years in gaol for unjust reasons. But Mandela was not the only one, thousands of other people made self-sacrifices even greater then he. Many people were shot dead in protest including children I recommend that you research the Soweto massacre. This question is a very important question and a very very big one.

Apartheid affected everyone in South Africa because each person was legally forced to be classified by race. However, black Africans were most adversely affected.

The now defunct racial policy of South Africa called apartheid provided that society in that country separate races. Under this policy whites, Africans, Asiatic, and socalled "Colored" populations lived apart. It has since been abolished. Many social scientists wondered why this took so long. One thought was that despite the moral & political problems of apartheid, South Africa was so prosperous that Africans from nearby nations emigrated to S.A.

Apartheid is extremely important to almost everybody around the world. It is essential to learn about this tragedy for many reasons including: * To inform South Africans about their history * People may understand South African law and politics * People around the world can be informed about the negative effects so that this can be avoided and it will hopefully prevent other governments from iplementing such policies The Apartheid policies shaped South Africa as it left its mark in South African culture and in the hearts of every witness.
