My guess is an audio interface. I recommend the PreSonus Firepod Interface. It has 8 inputs, each with a volume control, a headphone volume control, a main audio out volume control, and it's only $400, you won't find an interface that good for any cheaper. To record a crowd, you want a wide-field mic. It should be omni-directional. This means that it will pick up sound from any direction, not just the person right in front of the mic. Make sure to not mic too close to the crowd, or else one guy will be WAY louder than anyone else. Also, use more than one mic.
