Should parents baby talk to their baby?
It depends what is meant by baby talk and it is really important to discourage one type of baby talk but definitely not the other.
There is a type of baby talk called " parentese " or " motherese" which is the way you hear most parents talk to their young babies. It is the natural way adults and older children talk to babies using a special high pitched sing song voice which glides up and down, exaggerates the vowel sounds and repeats sounds. It seems that all around the world there are versions of baby talk. Something like "Coochy coochy coo" would qualify as 'baby talk'. It is useful to babies because

- prefer it to adult-type conversation
- they can see the shape the speaker's mouth makes to say "oo"

The next type of baby talk is where adults talk to their babies using the 'baby words' that babies say while they are learning to speak, like 'na-na " for banana. This is the type of baby talk parents should avoid using themselves, especially after baby reaches 12 months. By then baby should be saying sounds and short words he's picked up during the the infant months. It's okay for the baby to say na-na until his mouth muscles are mature enough to pronounce Ba-na-na , but the parents and carers should always be using the correct pronunciation as a good model for the baby so he doesn't think the 'baby words" are the correct way to speak.
