Batteries

Batteries are sources of chemical energy that are used in circuits to provide electrical energy for a wide range of useful devices. Any questions and answers regarding batteries or other power supplies would be welcome here.

What is the source of electrons that flow through a wire with a battery and light bulb connected in a simple circuit?

The electrons come from the metal of the wire, light bulb filament, and plates inside the battery. In other words, they are already everywhere in the circuit, even before it is connected together.

The electrons are made to move (and thus do work, e.g. heating the filament to make light) by the electromotive force generated by the corrosion of the metal plates inside the battery by the electrolyte between those plates.

Note: while the electric current flows around the circuit at a speed close to the speed of light, individual electrons within that current actually move very slowly due to the fact they keep bouncing off atoms and other electrons thus performing a "random walk". These speeds are on the order of millimeters per hour.

How long does a hydrogen car last?

Who knows as there are no hydrogen cars in production.

What kind of soldering gun is used to silver solder batteries?

You can do it but you have to be VERY careful for silver solder a very large 100w+ gun may be needed you CANNOT overheat the batteries or they WILL explode or be made useless.

What kind of energy is stored in a flashlight battery enabling it to function?

Well, most portable electronics will us Direct Current energy, or DC energy, for short. Direct Current is a weaker form of electricity. Alternating Current is the other form of electricity. It is used in houses. The reason they don't use AC energy for small things is because the converter needed for the AC weighs about 2 pounds for a single appliance. To use one that can do multiple things at once, like the ones in your house, then you must buy the regular, larger converters, which cost around 2000 dollars for the cheaper ones. And, don't forget that they weigh about 3300 pounds each!

I have an iMac and it said that the mouse was running low on battery power. When I put the new batteries in it would not turn on. I need to use my iMac for something and now it's not working?

Make sure the batteries are in the right way, and are the right batteries, and are live batteries. Also check your system to see if the mouse is being detected.

Does a starter drain a battery?

A starter does drain a battery. The battery holds a charge so that you can use your starter to start the car. After the car is started the alternator recharges your battery and runs your car and all it's accessories. If your car won't start or is having a hard time starting you can drain your battery by repeated unsuccessful attempts to start it.

How can you make a battery work with air and salt water?

A home made battery can be made using the Voltaic method. Professor Alessandro Volta in the 1800s used zinc and copper discs each separated by cardboard soaked in slightly salty water.

By taking two wires, one from the top and the other from the bottom of the pile, you should get a voltage. The capacity will be determined by the size of the discs and the number of pairs of discs. Each pair is called a "cell".

If you get it right you should be able to run a small dc fan or a light a bulb if you choose ones that will run on the voltage the pile produces.

How do you know when the battery is dead?

A visual check shows an excess of white buildup between plates. This is lead sulphate. If it is touching both plates in a cell, that cell is dead. This reduces power from the entire battery and may render it useless for applications that need full 12V. If a battery does not retain charge despite long hours of charging, it is dead. The lead oxide paste may have flaked off or the lead plates may have corroded leading to non-retention of charge and a dead battery is the result. If charging does not raise battery voltage or show adequate current according to its Ah rating, the battery is dead. If it is dried up and left unused without recharging for a long time, the battery dies.

Can grow lights recharge AA batteries in solar lights?

No, grow lights cannot recharge AA batteries in solar lights. Grow lights are designed to provide specific wavelengths of light for plant growth, while solar lights typically rely on solar panels to convert sunlight into electrical energy for charging batteries. For recharging AA batteries, a dedicated battery charger designed for that purpose is required. Using grow lights as a charging source is inefficient and not effective for this purpose.

Where is the expiration date of batteries?

most are legible on the battery itself and always on the original packaging. However, some are tricky to spot. Look along the battery bottom edge while holding the battery straight up. Or, some have the date printed in the same color as the battery coating. Those are the hardest to see. I have some from walgreens that have no date at all. This is particularly irritating. happy hunting!

What size is a 1100mah vape?

1100 mah is the battery capacity, the shape and size will depend heavily on the model of battery.

How do you atach an axel to a piece of wood on a battery powered car?

Mounting axles on Model Vehicles

I am forced to assume that you are asking about a small, model electric car. IF SO, then the axle could be attached by drilling a hole, or holes through the wood to insert the axle through.

Another possibility is to use heavy duty staples with round tops versus flat [the kind of staples telephone cable is attached to the baseboards and trim in a house or office]. These are usually available at local hardware stores and big box home improvement centers like Home Depot, Lowe's, or Sutherland's.

Another possibility is to glue some tubing [even a cut section of a "soda straw" may work it the weight and torque loads are not too great] glued to the wood, and the axle inserted through the tube or straw.

You also could cut small "tabs" out of an aluminum or steel can and bend them to surround the axle, and then glue, staple, or screw those tabs to the wood.
