When is it too late for contraception?

If you mean when is it too late to medically terminate a pregnancy, I believe it depends on the situation. If this is a personal decision not based on medical reasons, then I believe it is 12 weeks (first trimester) although sooner is better (not something to be put off unless you were not aware of the pregnancy). If this is for medical reasons due to problems with the fetus or mother, then I believe there are options further into the pregnancy. For example, some older women chose to have an amnio test to look for problems which cannot be done until the 4th month of pregnancy. If a potential chromosone problem is found, the mother can chose to terminate the pregnancy at that point (which is later than if it is a personal choice). I believe there are always options based the situation, speak with your doctor.

About how much does the Mirena IUD cost in all including the insertion and follow-up?

I was having some problems with mine and asked my doctor about taking it out. Without insurance they said something like $150, but I was already there seeing the doctor, so I'm not sure if that included the fee they charge you just to be there... So it might be the $150 plus whatever base charge.

I just got my IUD removed and got the bill now. My NY Gynae charged $345 for the removal, even though I was already there to get a routine examination, and it took her about 30 secs to take it out. So no big breaks there. Although I have insurance, my plan doesn't cover it, and I have to pay the full amount.

Is it bad to wait a few days to restart birth control after being off it with sugar pills for your period Or do you have to wait to another week upon restarting another pack?

You start the new packet of pills the day after you take the last sugar pill, no waiting or delays - the bad thing about skipping a week is the very real possibility of pregnancy since a week of sugar pills followed by skipping another week of active pills means you may very likely ovulate before starting the new packet of pills.

You need to use back up (like condoms) until you have taken 7 active pills over 7 days to prevent pregnancy, if you start a new packet even 1 or 2 days late.

Women who don't ovulate naturally may have one of two problems that are helped with birth control pills:

  • In women with polycystic ovarian syndrome and other high- or normal-estrogen states who don't ovulate, the risk of endometrial cancer is high. The birth control pill can eliminate this risk.
  • In women with anorexia or other low-estrogen states who don't ovulate, the estrogen in the birth control pill can offer some protection against bone loss.

Talk with your health care provider regarding whether it makes sense for you to use the birth control pill for noncontraceptive reasons.
