Bulldogs

Originally bred to bait bulls in medieval times the bulldog was built to endure rough treatment. Once bull-baiting was outlawed in the 1800's the breed nearly faced extinction. Thanks to many dedicated hobbyists the breed was brought back from the brink and selectively bred into the docile easy-going dog you see today. Questions regarding the care and history of bulldogs are welcome here.

Why does bulldogs skin is hanging?

Because of excess flesh not necessary to cover the face. That excess flesh has nowhere to go except down.

====================================================

Well, that answer speaks only to the (literal) gravity of the situation.

If the question is why does a bulldog have so much excessive or extra skin? The answer is they were bred to capture and suffocate bulls and bears. They are a man made, hunting dog of ages past. The excess skin was bred in to make it more difficult for a larger animal's teeth to grab on to them and do damage.

The lower body (from just under the rib cage) is much smaller and was bred that way to allow the dog more protection when being bitten and thrashed about by the likes of a bull or bear.

The excess skin that forms the "jowls" around the mouth, and droops down their face was bred in to them to act as suffocating "baffles" when they placed there entire, extra wide mouth over the snout of a bull or bear. The dog would clamp down on the bulls snout, closing the mouth and covering the bull's (or bear's) nostrils with those floppy jowls. Every time the animal would breath out, the jowls wouldn't allow an inhale and the bulldog would bring them down.

The nose wrinkle was actually breed in to divert their prey's blood from running into their eyes while clamping on the face.

Are toy bulldogs the same as a french bulldog?

The Miniature Bulldog or "Toy Bulldog", as it's also known, is a cross between an English Bulldog and a Pug thought to be extinct. They were developed and used to create the French Bulldog. Which contrary to popular belief, did not originate in France but in England along side of the Boston Terrier, a cross between the Toy Bulldog, the White English Terrier, along with an infusion of French Bulldog in the 19th Century. The "Miniature Bulldog"/"Toy Bulldog" was developed by Lace Makers and Artisans in the 19th Century.

However, many of the "Toy Bulldogs" were pushed out of England in the mid- to late 19th century as they were perceived as a threat to the English Bulldogbreed.

In the early 21st century, breeders were advertising "Miniature Bulldogs", but these seem to be newly created Bulldog - Pug crossbreeds.

What is the best way to stop a food aggressive dog from trying to become the alpha dog?

A food aggressive dog is potentially dangerous. Many shelters will not try to rehome a pet with this trait. A person who doesn't have a dog training background will not have the skill and patience to rehabilitate such a canine by herself, and may get bitten while trying. Displaying food aggression does not necessarily mean that the animal is trying to be the leader of the pack; he could have issues with food from his past, he could be fearful, or he could be confused about how he is supposed to behave. The most effective way to address this issue is to find the best positive-method dog trainer in your area and speak with him about how to proceed. No harsh techniques should be used to correct this problem. You will spend some money in the process, and it will take a while, but you will end up with a calmer, safer, happier pet.

Is an American bulldog a restricted breed?

As far as I can find the American Bulldog is not a restricted breed, at least not in my area (Ga). But because of recent legislation there a lot of places that now require spay/neuter , so it is harder to find animals in some places. Many people confuse the American Bulldog with the Pitt Bull, who is believed (regardless of fact) to be a dangerous, violent breed. While American Bulldogs were once used as working dogs, or even in the bloody sport of bull baiting, they are gentle, great with kids, and recognized for their acts of extreme courage and heroism regarding their owners.

I read the previous persons answer to this question and was outraged. I own an American and can't believe what that person had to say about them. It is hard to imagine them ever having owned one themselves with that to say, but if that was the case I think it is a problem with the owner maintaining alpha role and controlling their dog, thus any dog would be just as unruly in their care.

What can't English buldogs eat?

Bulldog owners should generally avoid allowing their dogs to consume grapes (including raisins), chocolate, avocado's, toothpaste, macadamian nuts, milk, gum (chewing), garlic/onions, candy (sweets etc.), and in some cases products that may contain soy (a high percentage of English bulldogs have been found to be allergic).
