How do TVs work?

There are many resources that offer detailed and very technical descriptions of television technology. It is a complex system and there is space here for no more than a very brief summary.

Television cameras convert light into electrical signals. The signal they generate is a stream of data that represents the amount of red, green and blue in the image. The light coming into the camera is sampled at the top left of the image first and then all the way across the image to the right. The next samples will do the same but slightly lower. The process is repeated until the bottom of the image is reached and then the light sampling begins all over again. The number of lines that are sampled can be 480 or 576 for standard definition signals and 1080 for high definition. In either case, the signal that is output from the camera describes the image it sees 50 or 60 times each second.

Studios capture these signals and after they have been mixed with other camera outputs and titles, the signal is broadcast. It is carried over cable or radio links and received at the television.

The television uses the same signal to draw an image. Starting from the top left, the brightness levels in the electrical signal are used to produce red, green and blue dots across the screen. The next line is then drawn and so on down the screen until the image is complete. As soon as the image is drawn on the whole screen, the process starts over and it is this repeating process that creates the moving image.

There are many details of television signal capture, process and display that are left out of this description. For those who want to know more, topics that can be researched should include PAL and NTSC color encoding, interlaced television signals, SD and HD signal resolution, CRT television operation, LCD television operation and plasma television operation. There are numerous answers on this site that deal with some of these topics and of course there is lots more elsewhere on the Internet.

How do you rewire a 240 volt motor to run on 120 volts using the existing house wires.I do not want to use a converter box?

Answer for USA, Canada and countries running a 60 Hz supply service. If it is a 240 volt motor having split windings in place to be able to run on 120 volts, then there is usually a connection chart on the motor somewhere on or behind the motor wiring cover plate. There will be at least 4 lugs for running it in series for 240V or parallel for 120V and possibly a couple more terminals to reverse its direction.

You could try entering the make and model number of the motor into an Internet search engine to see if you can find a wiring diagram for it.

What is the period of a wave traviling 5 ms it its wavelength is 20 m?

If a wave is traveling at 5 meters per second (assuming that is what the question meant) and its wavelength is 20 meters, consider standing beside the wave and watching it pass. As the wave is 20 meters long and it is moving at 5 meters per second, it will take 4 seconds for the full cycle of the wave to pass an observer. That means its frequency is one cycle per 4 seconds. And - surprise! - that's the period of the wave. The period of the wave is 4 seconds.

What is the show New Intelligence with Jan Cox about?

There are different answer to this question:

The show is about consciousness and is for people who are not satisfied with the mechanical, habitual thoughts they are made to think. You are not your thoughts. This is not easily described, hence the use of metaphor. Jan may seem to be talking about politics, the church or auto repair, but it is all metaphor, with the intended aim of producing a vantage point within you that can see what is really going on, rather than what you have learned is going on. Look on google video for jan's Intro, a 13hour crash course designed to separate those who need this type of activity from those who simply Think they do.

Or:

One of the actions that Jan was able to translate to a few of us over the years was to SEE a real difference between the mind's ordinary, habitual, incessant, comment upon itself as opposed to the effort of "consideration" or the "experience" of something with absolutely NO horizontal thought or comment therein. -- Rick Moser
