How big of a tank should painted turtles have?
That depends on the size of the turtle and the size of your tank. If the turtle is the size of your palm or smaller then fill the tank no more than 2-3 times his height (as if he were standing all the way up on his back two feet). If the turtle is larger than that you can fill a tank up to around 2 feet deep. Make sure the turtle has a spot where he can get out of the water easily to bask under a light.

One reason for our ears to turn red is that at times our sympathetic nervous system kicks in on its own and causes our bodies to release adrenalin and noradrenalin. Noradrenalin is the chemical responsible for relaxing the smooth muscle in the walls of the blood vessels. When the smooth muscle in the blood vessels relaxes the diameter of the vessel increases and the volume of blood passing through the blood vessel also increases. This is referred to as vasodilatation. When this happens the skin feels warm and may have a pink or red colour.
This usually happens when we feel nervous or stressed and is part of the "fight or flight" mechanism, even though the only "threat" may be social. However, in some people the sympathetic nervous sytem is overactive. This can be caused by inherited genes. We have no conscious control over the sympathetic nervous system so it kicks in without our decision to be "embarassed."
The sympathetic nervous system is part of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), the control system for the body that keeps all our internal organs functioning properly. These maintenance activities are primarily performed without conscious control or sensation, The nerves report directly back to the brain stem and can keep functioning even when the conscious mind is no longer working, hence the ability of some brain-dead patients to continue to breathe. The ANS controls heart rate, digestion, respiration rate, salivation, perspiration, diameter of the pupils, micturition (the discharge of urine), blushing, sweating, and erection.
Uncontrollable blushing is also called Idiopathic Craniofacial Erythema. Treatments include anti-anxiety medications, clonidine (inhibits the action of noradrenaline), beta-blockers, hypnosis, psychotherapy, and as a last resort, surgery.
Sweating is also controlled by the ANS and the cause of hyperhidrosis has been traced to overactivity in the sympathetic component, as opposed to the parasympathetic component, of the ANS.
There are other causes of flushing and sweating. Some people sweat excessively because they are obese or they may be suffering from an overactive thyroid gland. Menopause is another obvious cause of both flushing and sweating. Flushing and sweating can also be prominent physical symptoms associated with the mental health condition known as social phobia. Flushing is almost never due to a serious medical condition with one notable exception, which is the rare condition known as carcinoid syndrome.
Medication may also give rise to flushing. The list of possible culprits includes various hormonal treatments for prostate cancer; gylceryl trinitrate, which is used in the treatment of angina; tamoxifen, which is used in the treatment of breast cancer; raloxifene, which is used for treating osteoporosis; calcium channel blockers, which are used to treat high blood pressure and chlorpropamide, which is used for treating diabetes and can cause flushing if the person takes alcohol concurrently.

Do painted turtles like to play?
Yes, one can have a painted turtle as a pet. The real question might be, should you have a painted turtle as a pet? Painted turtles are beautiful and engaging creatures. In some parts of the country, they are endangered. In other places, their populations are at risk and declining. It is my opinion, as a painted turtle owner and a veterinarian, that painted turtles are best left in the wild.
That said, if you have your heart set on a pet painted turtle, there are a few things to keep in mind. All pet turtles require extremely clean water, although they are naturally dirty creatures. They must have UVA and UVB lamps. The bulbs are somewhat expensive and must be changed annually. Turtles need a source of steady heat. Although they can hibernate outside, they cannot survive long term at a chilly (60-74) temperature. Turtles can't just be fed "turtle pellets." They need at least some live food, plants and some prey. They must have an appropriate basking area. They require an excellent filtration system and regular cleaning. Most importantly, they need a BIG tank or pool. Personally, I believe it is downright cruel to keep an adult painted turtle in any enclosure less than 75 gallons. It's the equivalent of you being kept in a closet for your entire life. My turtle's tank is 150 gallons. This weighs a lot.
Finally, if you really want a painted turtle, please consider rescuing one. They live a long time, upwards of 40 years if they are properly cared for. One can often find free turtles on craigslist and various rescue organizations.

How do you know if a turtle is in labor?
When she starts to deliver, mom will hunch over and start moving around a lot. Usually, she will have all of the babies in her nest, but she might also have them in different areas in the cage. Don't worry, though, she will gather them up and bring them back. If you get a good look, you might see her deliver one. They come out head first and feet first. It doesn't matter, so don't worry about it. Mom will take care of herself and her new litter.
No. And neither do adult ones. And neither do toads. Warts are caused by viruses spread primarily person to person, through physical contact and exposure to common facilities like showers and bathtubs.
Genetic modification is when you take a beneficial gene, a bit of DNA, from one species and add it to the DNA sequence of another species. The genetically modified subject will use the gene and benefit from it, for example to grow better fruit or be resistant to disease, or to produce insulin.
The above process has been done for thousands of years by a bacteria called Agrobacterium which causes a plant root disease called "Agrobacterium Root Gall" The disease causing genes can be replaced with other sequences of DNA which the bacteria then inserts into the plant for them. There are many different ways, but this is the most common.
Genetic manipulation is also done in medicine and agriculture. In agriculture, it is most commonly done to create crops that are resistant to synthetic herbicides or to create crops that produce a substance that kills insects when they eat the plant.
Baby turtles typically hatch during the nighttime hours. This usually occurs between 6-8 weeks after the eggs have been laid, but it can vary depending on species. The darkness of night helps protect them from predators as they make their way to the ocean.
