Use a code reader, scanner or jumper the OBD2 connector terminals. (Connector located under lower edge of dash at steering column). You will need a pin chart and then retreve the codes manually. Best to get the manual of find someone who has access to a shop repair manual.

The shift cables for cavaliers are a dealer only part and usually run from 150-180$

I made a call to local wreck yard, told me $45 and pull myself.

Depending on colours of course black is usually negative and the other colour (generally red but depends) is positive. Get a D-cell Battery. Now get two pieces of speaker wire. hold one wire on the positive terminal of the battery and hold the other on the negative side of the battery. touch the wires to the positive and negative posts on the speaker. if the cone moves out ward the positive and negative are correct if it moves inward then the positive and negative are reversed (out of phase.) this simple test will allow you to see which terminal is which.

To protect yourself and your car, disconnect your battery before doing any kind of work that involves the electrical system of your car.

1. Remove the alternator/serpentine belt, either by pushing the spring loaded belt tensioner back using a 15mm wrench (a pain in the arse), or by cutting it with a knife (much easier), seeing as you should replace it during this process anyways.

2. Completely remove the bolt on the top left of the alternator using a 15mm wrench (viewing from front of the car)

3. Loosen (you don't need to completely remove) the top right bolt using a 15mm socket and extender

4. Remove the lower mounting bolt from the alternator (also 15mm), you may wish to temporarily remove the coolant reservoir (13mm bolt, I think)for easier access to this bolt and the belt tensioner.

5. Disconnect the two wires attached to the alternator, one is a plug, the other is a screw on type.

6. Finagle the alternator out of the engine bay, (once again, easier with the coolant reservoir out of the way)

Now complete steps 1-6 in reverse order, the only part that should require much force is pushing back the belt tensioner, you will need a 15mm box end wrench (get the longest one you have available out for torque), as a normal socket wrench won't have clearance, and be careful not to let the wrench slip and hit the hand you are using to slide the belt on, you could end up with a broken finger.

Its just above the oil filter, between the filter and the starter; its a tight fit. FYI the bolt is an 8mm.

The 2002 Chevy Cavalier 02 sensor can be found attached to the air cleaner housing. The O2 sensor will be on the back side of the air cleaner housing.

I have a 99 Chevy Cavalier and I've had SO many problems with it. My head gasket blew a few years ago (when the car was still relatively new but not under warranty anymore)....cost over $1000 to fix. Just a few weeks ago the alternator went and then a week or two after that the battery died

smokingallowed say's...There are several things to check but the answer lies with either fuel or fire...First answer guy is sad that his alternator and battery lasted 12 years...(sigh)

The coil is inside. Check to see if the filter is dirty as well. To clean the coil you must remove the front panel to the evap coil. If you have a flat coil you must slide the coil out to clean it. If you have an A coil, take off the plate on the front of the coil and you should be able to visually inspect the coil. It is important that you do not mash the dirt into the coil fins.

Only came with a 2.2 or 2.4-both 4 cyls.

didnt they stop making z24's in 2002-2003. and it requirs pull the motor apart

My first guess would be a defective Torque Converter lock-up Solenoid. Very common on these cars. Disconnect the solenoid, and if the problem goes away the solenoid needs replacing.

im having the same problem but i know it goes to the white or orange wires going to your coil packs.

I the front of the vehicle, I believe on the drivers side by the headlights.

check to make sure it is the sunroof for one, 2nd after your sure, replace the rubber seal, 40 bucks i think, the rubber gets old and the window wont set down onto it properly anymore, also if you have gallon of water in the back seat but roof isn't wet, its not the sunroof, its the front window leaking down the frame rails then into the back seat, my sunroof leaks barely, but made me think the gallons in back seat was it, it was not the source of the heavy leaks, anyhow, hope it helps ya...

Possible plugged pcv system causing excessive pressure. It may just be failing gaskets or seals. 95+ cavaliers are infamous for leaking head gaskets. Its a common problem with the original. I had to replace mine with only 18000 miles on my 2001. Take it to the dealer and have it replaced if you have an extended warranty....

The flasher is located under the dash below and to the drivers side of the radio just above a plate. Be careful when playing around under there because there are ways to trigger the air bags if your not careful. Take your time and you'll find it. ..

On the Z24 it is located in the center of the engine, front side, underneath the air intake. From below, you can find it up and on the driver side of the oil filter. When you disconnect it, locate the crank sensor that is also to the driver side of the oil filter and yet behind the starter. It tends to come unplugged when you drop the old starter out.

The starter on a 91 Chevy cav. is located at the lower front end of the engine.

You can get to it better by jacking the front of the car and attacking it from underneath.
