Remove the steering wheel and column lockplate. The lockplate is held in place by a snap ring in the center, you have to push down on the lock plate to get it off. There should be two or three screws holding the switch to the column (I can't remember how many, it's been a while since I had to change one) and a small screw that holds the lever to the switch. Unplug the switch from the wiring harness towards the bottom of the column and carefully pull the wires out. Replacement is basically the reverse of removal, take care when feeding the plug back through the column.

The SS had a different dash, with gauges, not idiot lights. I would contact Year 1, online, as they make reproduction parts, and will have everything you will need, from the dash, to the wiring harness you will need to change, to all the new sending units, you will need. The SS, was unique that year.

Straight 6: 200, 230, and 250. V8: 283, 307, 327, 350, 396, 402, 427, 454. Keep in mind that there were several different versions and performance levels of all of the V8's except for the 307 (only one 307 was offered.) The 427 was never a regular production engine for the Chevelle, but could be ordered with the Central Office Production Order program, and are extremely rare. In 1970 the 402 replaced the 396, but was still called a 396.

The first Chevelle SS was built in 1964 as an option on the Malibu trim package. The first big block Chevelle SS was the 1965 Z16 Malibu SS396. It is a VERY rare car, only 201 were ever produced. ALL 201 of them were equipped with 4 speed manual transmissions.

take horn cap off the center of the steering wheel and you will see large nut holding the wheel to the spindle, loosen nut and then you will need a wheel puller, install puller and tighten the nut down on the puller until the steering wheel frees itself from the spindle and your done.

Best left to a mechanic as the drive shaft has to come down and the big nut on the pinion gear that holds the drive shaft mount has to come off and then you can install the new pinion seal.

The easiest way by FAR is to simply replace it. Clocks in that era generally didn't last more than a few years. You COULD take it apart and attempt to rebuild it, but I highly doubt that the parts you'll need to repair it are even available, but an aftermarket replacement is.
