Chi's get very attached to their owners...and they will and sometimes do nip to protect what they love. My chihuahua gets along fine with my 2 year old grand-daughter, but I don't leave them alone unsupervised for any amount of time...to much can happen. My grand-daughter could be hurt by my chi, or my chi could be hurt by my grand-daughter. Having either on get hurt is not an option for me...I'm not willing to put either one at risk. I have to make a concisous decision that I can hold only one at a time...if I hold my grand-daughter, my chi must be on the floor. And if I'm holding my chi, my grand-daughter has learned that she has to let me put Diva on the floor before I can pick her up. When they are both on the floor playing there is no competition between the two of them for my attention and they are fine, in fact they play and chase each other constantly. Eisley will pet Diva's head and will bend down to kiss her. She even will try to feed her a treat and ask her to "zit"...and will give her the treat even though Diva hasn't sat down. So that being said, If you willing to chance the safety of your chihuahua and put him or her on a treadmill and run the dog, add weight, feed them high protein diet, potentially causing a host of other problems, them yeah they will get "buff" Can you do it without hurting the dog, sure its possible but why take the chance. OR you could do what I did and just buy a small dog that is genetically buff. I wanted a small dog like a chihuahua but wanted a ''buff'' dog too. I finally found a mix. The breed is fairly new and is called by several names Bullhuahua, Mexican Frenchie but, essentially it's a chihuahua and a french bulldog mixed. She is only 10lbs and looks just like a chihuahua that is on steroids. She has a great personality and I don't have to worry about trying to get her "buff"
