Cold and Flu

Questions and answers about the "Common Cold"; symptoms in the upper respiratory tract like sneezing, scratchy throat, and runny nose, but adults don't typically have fevers. Colds are usually caused by the rhinovirus (up to 40% of colds), or Coronaviruses (about 20%), but there are more than 200 viruses that can cause the common cold. Also questions about the seasonal flu, also called "regular flu", caused mostly by Type A and Type B Influenza viruses. Flu starts with similar symptoms as a cold only it hits faster and harder and usually includes fever in adults. Although the "stomach flu" is a common term, it is not a real diagnosis. The proper medical term for stomach flu is gastroenteritis (an intestinal disease, sometimes viral but also bacterial), it is often mistaken for influenza because the flu can sometimes include vomiting and diarrhea.

Do you feel hot or cold when you have a fever?

When your body raises its "thermostat", you begin to shiver, once the new set-point is established, the shivering stops, and you begin to feel HOT. With this "hot-feeling" you might lower the A/C setting in your home from 75 to 73 to not feel like your "burning". Once the fever is broken (without reducers), you raise the temp back to 75 to feel normal again.

Does curry help a cold?

I find that it gives some temporary relief of nasal congestion by thinning the mucous, but that's about all.

Is it safe for your child to get the H1N1 vaccine between his 1st and 2nd dose of the seasonal flu vaccine?

Yes, if they are getting both vaccines by injections. That timing of the two kinds of vaccinations (seasonal flu shot and swine flu shot) is not a problem, in fact they could be given at the same time. This is not true for the nasal mist vaccinations, however.

You can NOT take a nasal flu mist for swine flu at the same time as you take a nasal flu mist for seasonal flu. They can render each other ineffective. Ask a health care professional how long you should wait between these two kinds of nasal mist vaccinations.

You can take a nasal flu mist for swine flu with any other nasal flu mist vaccine EXCEPT the one for seasonal flu.

The 2009 H1N1 flu shot (inactivated 2009 H1N1 vaccine) can be given at the same visit as any other vaccine, including pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine.

You can take a swine flu nasal mist at the same time as a seasonal flu shot.

You can take the H1N1/09 swine flu shot and a nasal mist for the seasonal flu at the same time.

There would be no reason to take the swine flu shot at the same time as the swine flu nasal mist since both do the same thing, so that should not be done.

Tired dizzy hot flashes nausea for 5 days but not always Milky white cervical mucus No fever 30 day cycle Only cycle day 16 Possible that ovulation was very early Or is this a mild cold or flu?

I apologize for the terrible formation of this question. It would not let me include any punctuation besides the question mark and had a limited number of characters I was allowed to use.

Basically for the last five days or so I've been experiencing exhaustion, dizziness, hot flashes, and nausea, but not all of the time. Today I noticed a milky white discharge resembling ejeculate that is not similar to mucus I normally experience mid-cycle. I generally have a 30 day cycle though I'm slightly irregular. Today is only cycle day 16 and I was wondering if it is possible that I ovulated right after menstruation and I'm pregnant, or if it's more likely that I have a cold or flu?

I've been off of birth control for over a year and have been trying to conceive for 7 months. I don't want to take an HPT this early since according to all calculations I was supposed to have ovulated today or tomorrow, not a week and a half ago.

Any suggestions?

My grandma is getting old and sick. How should I cope?

Well, really all you can do is be there for her, listen to her, let her know you love her. All you can really do is be there for someone like that, I have had the experience many times before, it's hard to cope, I understand.

The best way I can think of right now, is to think, she will be going to a better place when she goes. She will no longer be sick or be in any pain, and she will always be watching over you and taking care of you.

In the meantime, spend as much time with her as you can, family is the most important thing.

I will pray over her health and I will pray that you will have peace.

(Dunno if you believe in that stuff, so I apologize if I offend you with it, I hope not.)

What is the difference between vaccine conjugate and Polysaccharide vaccine?

Vaccines use different types of vaccination technology - Polysaccharide and Conjugate are different types of technologies. It is generally considered that Conjugate vaccines provide superior long-term protection versus Polysaccharide vaccines because of the mechanism by which they create an antibody response. While polysaccharide vaccines may offer individual protection, they do not provide the same level of "herd immunity" (i.e. non-immunized individuals provided protection due to number of immunized individulas in community) provided by Conjugate vaccines.

What body temperature is dangerous?

there are two body temperatures that can be dangerous. The body's normal temperature should be 37.5c. This is the temperature at which the body can work best at. If the body temperature rises above 37.5c this is a condition called Hyperthermia when the body absorbs more heat than it can dissipate. Temperatures above 40c are life-threatening and needs treating immediately. If the body temperature drops below 37.5c then this condition is called Hypothermia this is usually caused to excessive exposure to cold settings such as cold air and water. It is subdivided into four different degrees, mild 32-35 °C (90-95 °F); moderate, 28-32 °C (82-90 °F); severe, 20-28 °C (68-82 °F); and profound at less than 20 °C. Medical attention is need when the body temperature drops below (32c).

What does H1N1 'SOIV' mean?

SOIV = Swine Origin Influenza Virus (or as some say: Swine Originated Influenza Virus.

This acronym was first used in the April 29, 2009 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), by researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to mean "swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus,". They also used "S-OIV" for short. The same name also appeared in a paper May 7, 2009 in The New England Journal of Medicine. But, on the day before that, in the May 6, 2009 issue of MMWR, the CDC had already coined the different name "novel influenza A (H1N1) virus".

SOIV is also what some public health organizations in Canada began to use to refer to A-H1N1/09, the Pandemic Swine Flu. The nomenclature of flu viruses is not standardized, and because of the negative repercussions that pigs (with slaughter in some countries) and Mexico's tourist industry have felt by having their names so closely associated with the virus, it has been an ever changing evolution of names during the early parts of the pandemic.

The A-H1N1/09 Virus still has different names in other countries as well, for example: it is called Schweinegrippe in Germany, la Grippe A in France, Mexican Flu in the Netherlands, SOIV (Swine Origin Influenza Virus) in Canada, and la Epidemia in Mexico.

The H1N1 refers to the Hemagglutinin type (H1) and Neuraminidase type (N1) there are about 14 H types and 9 N types, and Influenza can have any combination of those. The H and N are proteins that are on the outer virus coat, called a capsid. They have specific functions for allowing the virus to invade host cells and the "offspring" to be released by the cells once produced. Our immune systems create antibodies that search for foreign invaders and they can use these proteins to identify the virus and create cells able to destroy it. These surface proteins are also mutated by some viruses to make them unidentifiable by the antibodies, and that is what can create a new strain of influenza.

How does a cold virus disrupt homeostasis in the body?

When you have a cold virus, your body starts to produce more mucus to catch the viruses and it increases the temperature to make it too uncomfortable for the virus to multiply. Therefore, it disrupts it by causing your body to increase its temperature and produce more mucus.

Is 2012 flu shot protecting us from flu b?

Yes, every year in the US the annual flu vaccine is made with three types of flu viruses, two Type A flu viruses and one Type B. This is true with the 2012-2013 vaccines. See the related questions for more information.

Are flu shots a government conspiracy?

They are not a conspiracy in any negative way. The government does want citizens to take the flu shots, so they don't get sick with the flu. The flu kills, and also has economic impacts when workers are off sick and production goes down. There are good reasons to want people to take flu shots, which only help your body do what it would normally do anyway, except the vaccinations do it without making you sick in the process of creating the immunity.

Do all flu viruses have H N?

All Type A influenza viruses have H and N (these are two proteins that are on the outer shell of the virus particle--Hemagglutinin and Neuraminidase). The other influenza virus types B and C each only have one serotype and they do not include the H and N.
