Good question. It can mean a variety of things.

It could be referring to the speed of a CD or DVD drive, meaning how much faster than the original industry standard the drive spins.

Examples might be 16X read, 6X rewrite, 8X write.

It can also in the same manner refer to an AGP slots speed (4X AGP, 8X AGP)

if it appears as X8, it's likely referring to the number of channels of the PCIe slots. the most common PCIe slots are X1, X8 and X16.

Those are the most common uses, but without an actual context, I cannot say what YOUR 8X means.

For instance, if it's an ad that says "costs 8X less than a MAC" then obviously the meaning is different.

Computer MEMORY, Also known as Ram, is what speeds up your computer. Programs on your computer need memory as a temporary storage to run, only when the programs are running is it using memory. Depending on what computer you have and/or what you want and what you do on your computer. If you do a lot of multi-tasking with a lot of programs open then consider getting a 6 GB on a desktop and a 4 GB on a laptop. if you don't multi-task with multiple programs then consider getting from 4 GB on a desktop and 1-3 GB on a laptop. But usually 4 gigabytes is fine. I have a 3 GB Memory laptop with WIN7 Ultimate and it works pretty smoothly. If i had another GB for memory I would never have to worry about my laptop being slow on me

It's hard to say which laptop is the best for a middle class family because it really depends on what your child will be using it for. Are you looking for a laptop for your kids to do homework on and surf the internet a little or are you looking for something they can use to play games and watch videos on? I would look at the laptop specs and see which one best fits the needs of your kids. The other thing to consider is the age of your children. If your kids are teenagers or college age they may need a more powerful computer than young children.

I bought my teenagers the Dell XPS 13" Ultrabook. My oldest two children are in high school and this laptop is very sleek, light weight and portable. They are able to carry them in their backpacks and have used them for some online classes they are taking. My son also uses it to play online games and the quality is fantastic.

I have not bought a laptop for my elementary school age child. He uses the desktop we have at home, but if I did I would probably go with the Dell Inspiron 15R. It is more than enough power for my son to use for his homework. He would not have any reason to take it anywhere so I wouldn't pay more for a super slim laptop for him. He would also get a kick out of picking out his own color. Both of these laptop prices are middle of the road or below the average cost.

Cant fault asus laptops, me and my friend both bought similar spec laptops, mine is asus his was samsung, he payed nearly twice as much with the opinion that he didnt want cheap Chinese crap that would break after 6 months.

Long story short his designer laptop has been mended once and then replaced, my cheap Chinese crap still runs like the day i bought it.

When your looking for a good gaming laptop there are a lot of things to consider besides gigahertz. You should look at what type of graphics card the laptop has, as well as the ram and motherboard. These things are equally important. As far as gigahertz goes I think that a 2.2 to 2.6 GHz is about the minimum you can go, but to really enjoy most games I have found that a 3.1 to 3.3 GHz really makes a big difference. My gaming laptop has a 3rd generation Intel core 3.3 GHz processor and it runs like a dream for games like World of Warcraft and Skyrim.
