What is the most cost effective way to build a home computer?

The best way, if it's your first time, is to buy a kit. This avoids having to understand a lot of "geek" and essentially is just an assembly job. The more important question is what to buy. In reality 8 year old technology will be more than sufficient for 99.5% of you. The key issue is response time (so you don't have to wait). That issue has nothing to do with how fast the spec's are on a computer since an unmaintained computer can be brought to it's knees it just as easily as 8 year old technology (avoid toolbars and gadgets and opt for shortcuts on the desktop, strip your machine of junk software and learn a few tricks - there are lots of them on the net for whatever operating system you are running). Also....you don't need more than an 80GB disk drive, 2GB of memory, and low cost dual core processor will be more than satisfactory. That's the cost if you shop smart.......a lot less than $200.00 (plus your operating system). Note: Ubuntu is free and has everything you need. You don't need to pay for Windows.

Where should you sit your laptop?

Laptops should be put on a "Cooling Tray" or "Cooling Pad" as most people call it. If you do not wish to invest in a "Cooling Tray/Pad", do not set your laptop on a bed or carpet during use. A laptop, without a "Cooling Tray/Pad" should be on a desk or table at all times, so there is good ventilation. Failure to have ventilation can cause problems within the laptops hard drive. (Over heating) With a "Cooling Tray/Pad", a laptop may be placed anywhere, as long as the vents have space to maintain air flow to prevent over heating.
