Diffrentiate between active heatsink and passive heatsink?

In a active heatsink system you have both a heatsink and a fan thus for the most part an active heatsink cools better with one exception. Should the fan fail the active heatsink will quickly overheat.

Passive heatsinks relay on transferring heat without the aid of a fan. The advantage here is that a passive heatsink is fail proof and uses 0 electricity, however passive heatsinks don't typical cool as well.

Passive heatsinks work great for supporting chips and RAM cooling. They are also found in servers because of the no fail aspect.

EnzoTech produces some passive heatsinks you can read a bit more about them here:

Which tool should you use to test the serial port?

You would use a Loopback Plug, this allow an output signal to be returned as input.

What does a pci look like?

The PCI bus can be used for a wide variety of devices, so obviously not all PCI cards look exactly the same. Due to technical limitations, an image of a PCI card cannot be displayed in the answer, but example images are linked to below.

What devices are controlled by the system BIOS?

A computer BIOS initializes and tests the CPU, RAM, chipset, video card, keyboard, hard drive, optical disk drive, floppy drive, and interrupt handlers. Additionally, the bios will check ports on a computer.

Describe how you can access the BIOS setup program?

The BIOS setup program can be access by pressing a key or combination of keys during the boot process. The exact way to enter setup varies from one motherboard manufacturer to another.

Usually F2 or Delete but you must check your bootup screen

What are two types of PATA data cables?

Under parallel ata, two types of ribbon cable are used. The 80-conductor ide cable has 40 pins and 80 wires Forty wires are used for communication and data, and an additional 40 ground wires reduce crosstalk on the cable. An older 40-conducror cable has 40 wires and 40 pins. the two types of cables are PATA and IDE cables which come in a 80-conductor IDE cable and a 40-conductor cable

Is a bar code reader an output device?

Input because it is sending data to the computer.

What should you do if you have forgotten your BIOS password?

Do this carefully, and before touching anything inside your computer case, touch the metal outside of the case to discharge any static that might have built up. Look inside for the cmos battery, and there should be a jumper in the general proximity. Some motherboards you just need to pull it off and move it over a little and then move it back. Some, you need to move it over and turn the computer on and then put it back. Try both, and it should work.

The printer queue is a representation of the printers input and output?

What it is basically is a line of people waiting, but those people are documents or what ever waiting for there turn to be printed.

What are the similarities ROM and Hard-drives?

they are both storage devices. both have data that can be read and used during the operating of the computer.

What is a good name for a Computer Shop?

This is entirely up to opinion, and your demographic.

If you are seeking a more professional demographic for businesses and work systems, go with something that sounds distinguished. Real world existing example: Computer Repair Associates of Denver

If you are targetting gamers and end users, go with something exciting. Real world existing example: Tiger Direct, Big Daddy's Computers, Axle's Fear Computing

What is the storage capacity of cache memory?

Cache memory is a type of memory. It does not dictate a specific quantity. The actual amount varies and can best be determined by looking up the specifications for your particular CPU chip.

What is vaccume tube?

A vacuum tube is an instrument used to control the flow of electrons. The simplest form of this is called the triode and has three elements. An anode, a cathode, and a grid. The flow of electrons is always from anode to cathode the grid can influence the flow of the electrons. Like the light bulb the tube needs to be a vacuum or filled with gas to prevent the metals they are made of from catching on fire and melting.

The first person to discover that a grid could have an electric charge was Lee De Forest.

How does using a laser pointer to measure the data track spacing on cds and dvds?

First, make sure you have a laser pointer, and a protractor. You'll also need a black marker, calculator with tigonometry functions, an index card, several pieces of thin cardboard (cereal box or something similar), a sturdy box (preferably wooden), and a stack of books.

It's best to work near the edge of a table with good lighting. Anyway, place the CD, label side down, near the center of the workspace. Then put a piece of cardboard to the right of it, and another piece behind it. Both pieces should be about the same thickness as the CD itself. Place the box on top of all of this. If you want to avoid scratching it, put a piece of paper or tissue over the back half of the CD.

Is speaker an output device?

Short Answer: Yes

Long(er) answer: anything that receives signal from the computer to present something is an output device. This includes speakers, monitors, printers and other devices of that type.

What is important to remember when cleaning crt monitors?

Switch them off and allow time for the CRT to discharge. Do not spray cleaner on the screen, spray it on the cloth. Only use a clean non-scratch cloth. Allow the screen to dry fully before switching back on.

What the key function of the home key?

when you are writing in Word (or similar program) the home key will take you to the beginning of the line. Control+home will take you to the beginning of the document.

Is CPU an input device?

No not really, it's the brain.

CPU is the Central processing Unit which receives input via input devices like keyboard, mouse , scanner, mic etc. It's main job is to process the input and send to the relevant o/p device.

It controls the flow and process of instructions, in time with a clock pulse.

It needs to handle both input and output of binary data.

What are the types and capacity of a pen drive?

The storage capacity of a pen depends on its rating. They come in 4 gigabyte up to 64 gigabyte sizes.

What happens when you boot up a computer?

Answer

The computer gets power from the power suply inside the computer. from there the computer's bios kicks on and starts the CMOS program that is programmed into the BIOS chip. the CMOS program then begins to quickly check all the hardware. first it checks what kind of processor is in the computer, then counts the memory. It then checks the drives such as cdrom and harddrives then floppy. then it checks all the pci, isa, etc. cards and any other devices in the computer and gives each an irq (interrupt request). then the Bios (on most computers) checks first to see if theres a floppy in the drive and if so is it bootable and if so boots from the floppy. If the floppy is not bootable it then looks on the first hard drive's MBR (Master Boot Record) to see if its bootable and if so then boots to that drive.. if that one is not then keeps checking until it either finds a bootable harddrive or tells the user no drives are bootable and usually asks to insert a bootable floppy or restart the computer.

What would be the first concern if another adapter card wants to be added into a PC?

As long as there is a free slot of the right type and an opening, if it is needed, the card can be inserted. However, adding a card usually will require more power so it should be checked to be sure the power supply is sufficient. If not, the ower supply will also need to be upgraded. Upgrading the power supply is not unusual if the new card going in the PC is a powerful graphics card. These can generate a lot more heat as well, so the ventialtion of the computer is important.

What is the difference between a tranformer and a rectifier which are found in a computer power supply?

Transformer is a device that works only with AC (alternating current), and is frequently use to step up (increase) or step down (decrease) the voltage level. Therefore we can say that, in order to maintain or to bring the voltage level up to our requirement we use Transformer.

Though there are many classifications of Transformer, but more or less there purpose is almost the same, however only the function of instrument transformers (includes current transformer & potential/voltage transformer) is bit different. Voltage transformer is used with high voltage power systems and is use to bring the voltage level up to the rating where it can be measured easily by ordinary instruments (usually 120V). Similarly current transformer is used to bring the high rating of the current up to the value where it can be measured easily (usually 5A).

Rectifier is a device that is used to convert the Alternating current into Direct current or in short AC to DC converter is called rectifier. Rectifier is also classified as half wave, full wave, bridge, etc, but more or less there purpose is almost the same, except for the difference in their conduction pattern (half wave conduct for half cycle, full wave conduct in both directions for complete cycle). Conduction pattern of rectifier is determined by the number and working of diodes (the major component of rectifier).
