A dichotomous key is a tool used in biology and other sciences to identify organisms or objects by answering a series of questions that lead the user through a branching series of choices. Each question typically presents two contrasting options (dichotomies) that guide the user to the next step or to the identification of the specimen. This method simplifies the identification process by breaking it down into a series of yes/no decisions. Dichotomous keys are commonly used in taxonomy to classify plants, animals, and other biological entities.
