How has collective security been used as an instrument for conflict resolution in the international system?

Hahaha thats a big question and well a good question for this site. However, not one that i can write and i dont think anyone else will be able to write without writing a whole essay or spending hours researching. I did a degree in International relations and i can tell you its not an easy question to answer. The best approach would be to look at a few UN peacekeeping missions. Nonetheless most of these, as you probably aware, have not been successful. I would take a case study at look at something like Korea, Yugoslavia or East Timor where collective security has been used over period of time in order to achieve stability. Look at something like "The United Nations and Changing World Politics" their is a chapter on collective security. I did write something like this two years ago in Prague but partied a little to much to remember what i wrote.

If us humans are all social beings then why can't we all just talk out our differences instead of blowing off each others heads?

It is precisely because we are all human beings that this happens. We are not some kind of super beings just people, warts and all. It is naive to believe it can all be resolved without violence. Mankind is a violent creature. Some try to aspire to higher things, others have no wish to.

Can conflict bring out the best and the worst in people?

Yes it can, it happens often in books. Conflict between two characters or parties can cause shy people to finally speak out (good thing) it can also make people decide decisions wrongly (bad thing). So conflict changes friendships, relationships, and people in good and bad ways. It makes people stronger but not always in a good way.

What is conflict resolution in 'Antigone'?

The main conflict in 'Antigone' is the controversy over respect for divine and mortal authority. That conflict initially is resolved with Antigone's death. But the spin offs of that conflict in terms of Thebans and their city require the carrying out of the blind prophet Teiresias' recommendations and the ultimate exile of Theban King Creon.

Additionally, there are hierarchical questions in terms of respect for mortal authorities and family heads. For example, Creon doesn't cooperate with Teiresias, who deserves respect as the prophet of Thebes. Ismene doesn't cooperate with Antigone, who deserves respect as the elder sister. Haemon doesn't cooperate with Creon, who deserves respect as father and sovereign. Nor does Theban Queen Eurydice cooperate with Creon, who deserves respect as husband and sovereign.

In the first two cases, the conflict is resolved somewhat peaceably. So Creon tries to right the wrongs that he has done in not letting Polyneices' body be buried and in sentencing Antigone to death. Ismene likewise tries to make up for her initial lack of support by siding publicly with the arrested, tried and sentenced Antigone.

In the second two cases, the conflict is resolved violently. Haemon chooses to commit suicide rather than live one more minute without Antigone and under his father's harsh, godless rule. Eurydice likewise chooses to kill herself rather than live one more minute without her son and with her insensitive husband.

How does language cause conflict?

Language can spark conflict for any of the five below reasons:

Miscommunication: Often one person will hear all or part of something that someone else says and infer it to be an insult or a form of degradation. This provokes anger or sadness that may lead to conflict.

Assertion of Identity: In many cases, speaking a certain language is indicative of how a group of people assert their uniqueness and identity. This is because language reflects the way that a certain group of people think and their types of expressions. For example, one of the ways that Koreans say that the Japanese repressed their identity and culture was to compel them to speak Japanese.

Official Languages: In some countries, recognition or non-recognition of a particular language (usually a minority language) can cause conflict. Because language is an assertion of identity, failing to recognize a certain minority language as an official language is tantamount to not recognizing the minority's distinctive nature.

Demeaning of Other Languages: Some cultures will be dismissive of any language other than their own, making them less sensitive to the needs or problems of people who only speak those demeaned languages.

Use of Language as Ideological Carrier: Lastly, language serves as a carrier of ideas, views, and is a powerful motivator to action. It has been words that have preceded almost every show of force and led every group of ideological crusaders to action.
